Ricardo Alarcon, Cuban Vice Minister of Foreign Relations, commemorates revolutionary Cuban Catholic priest, traces history of Cuban revolution and religion. Eight Catholic priests joined the rebel forces fighting Batista, others fought clandestinely. Rural priest Guillermo Sardiñas became a rebel army officer after accompanying Castro and the guerrillas for a year and a half, developing pastoral work among the peasants in the Sierra Maestra. When the revolution triumphed, he was granted the rank of Comandante. He died in 1964, at 47, and until the end carried out his ministry without taking off his olive green uniform. He was a forerunner of liberation theology in Latin America.
