How does this work?
There are many ways to search the collections of the Freedom Archives. Below is a brief guide that will help you conduct effective searches. Note, anytime you search for anything in the Freedom Archives, the first results that appear will be our digitized items. Information for items that have yet to be scanned or yet to be digitized can still be viewed, but only by clicking on the show link that will display the hidden (non-digitized) items. If you are interested in accessing these non-digitized materials, please email info@freedomarchives.org.
Exploring the Collections without the Search Bar
Under the heading Browse By Collection, you’ll notice most of the Freedom Archives’ major collections. These collections have an image as well as a short description of what you’ll find in that collection. Click on that image to instantly explore that specific collection.
Basic Searching
You can always type what you’re looking for into the search bar. Certain searches may generate hundreds of results, so sometimes it will help to use quotation marks to help narrow down your results. For instance, searching for the phrase Black Liberation will generate all of our holdings that contain the words Black and Liberation, while searching for “Black Liberation” (in quotation marks) will only generate our records that have those two words next to each other.
Advanced Searching
The Freedom Archives search site also understands Boolean search logic. Click on this link for a brief tutorial on how to use Boolean search logic. Our search function also understands “fuzzy searches.” Fuzzy searches utilize the (*) and will find matches even when users misspell words or enter in only partial words for the search. For example, searching for liber* will produce results for liberation/liberate/liberates/etc.
Keyword Searches
You’ll notice that under the heading KEYWORDS, there are a number of words, phrases or names that describe content. Sometimes these are also called “tags.” Clicking on these words is essentially the same as conducting a basic search.

The program consists of a series of interviews and testimonies from women who defended themselves from rapists and assault. The stories are often quite emotionally difficult to listen to, but the stories are ultimately hopeful and inspiring.

This tape contains footage of a demonstration against the US war on Nicaragua. The tape also appears to contain sabotage of a railroad track.

This video contains footage of demonstrators protesting the US war on El Salvador at the Federal Building in San Francisco. This tape contains some footage of some demonstrators using paint-filled projectiles against the SFPD. SFPD makes arrests.
Brian Wilson Train Incident Brian Wilson Train Incident
WARNING!! THIS TAPE CONTAINS GRUESOME IMAGERY!! This video contains footage of the Brian Wilson Incident. On September 1, 1987, nonviolent activists, primarily from the religious community and Veterans For Peace, gathered at the Concord Naval Weapons Station to announce the commencement of a fast and to attempt to block a train shipment of arms headed for Central America. The train, which was notified of their presence does not stop and runs over activist Brian Wilson. It was later determined that the train was ordered not stop. Brian Wilson survived the incident, suffering the loss of his legs and severe skull fracture. He continues his antiwar activism. This video contains gruesome imagery of the incident and its immediate aftermath.

This video contains footage of a demonstration in San Francisco against the US war in El Salvador in which protesters knock over a police barricade and use projectiles against the SFPD. SFPD makes violent arrests.

Judy Gerber begins her program discussing the gruesome effects of toxic waste. Gerber interviews several persons connected with chemical plants such as IT and Stoffer Chemical. She also sheds light on the adverse health effects of toxic gases and metals released from these facilities, and on the faulty program for incinerating, or burning, toxic chemicals created by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).

Ben Linder Memorial service held at Herbst Hall, San Francisco California May 4, 1987. Engineer building hydro electric plants in Nicaragua from 1983 until he was killed by Contras April 28, 1987. At a press conference held on October 26, 1987 Kate Bancroft and Carolina Castaneda answer questions concerning the recent assassination of Herbert Ernesto Anaya Sanabria. Bancroft summarizes Sanabria's efforts to end human rights violations in El Salvador, while both women discuss the corruption of the El Salvadorian government. During the conference a video is shown, created by Sanabria, disclosing testimonies given by prisoners in La Esperanza of tortures they've received.
