A Defiant Heart’s February 16th, 1996 episode is dedicated to a conversation about the “English Only” controversy. In Georgia there is a movement to make English the official language as many residents of Georgia equate the ability to speak and read English to loyalty and citizenship. Gerber speaks about the attacks on bilingualism by the English Only Movement who seek a linguistically homogenous nation. Gerber states the real issue at stake is cultural genocide and the loss of one’s cultural and linguistic identity
