View of Entrance and Front Door of New Building

Dear Friends,

After almost 18 months of real estate listings, site visits and financial reviews… we’ve been able to find, finance and secure purchase of a new home for the Freedom Archives!

We could not have done this without a committed, patient and thoughtful team that took the time to walk us through the things we didn’t know, provide support during stressful moments, and centered our values and vision throughout the process.

We are excited about all the new opportunities that having a bigger and more accessible space will provide. This new space will help us safeguard the legacies contained within the archives for many decades to come. The new building is located in North Berkeley (in proximity to Bart, AC transit and bike paths), ADA accessible, over twice the size of our space in SF and full of light!

However, growth is never without some discomfort and we are sad to be leaving our community at 522 and 518 Valencia Street, the neighborhood, and the city. We’ve been a part of creating a vibrant fabric of solidarity and community in San Francisco and relocating, however exciting, brings up a myriad of mixed emotions.

Overall, we’re humbled by the support of you all and look forward to continuing our work for years to come. As is the case in any period of transition, we know that we will need to rely on our community as we make this change.

Thank you for allowing us to share this exciting news with you. We look forward to building with you in this next phase while we continue to preserve the past, illuminate the present and shape the future.

Sincerely,

Claude, Nathaniel, Danielle
