Peru President: New Yorker Berenson Not A Threat

 president says he doesn't consider Lori Berenson 
a threat to Peru and isn't ruling out commuting 
the New Yorker's accomplice-to-terrorism sentence so she can go home.

A court returned the 40-year-old Berenson to 
prison last month after prosecutors objected to 
her May parole after 15 years in prison. They called her a danger to society.

President Alan Garcia says in a CNN interview 
that while he understands many Peruvians feel 
Berenson should complete her 20-year prison term 
he feels for Berenson and her 16-month-old son.

Garcia says in the interview broadcast Tuesday 
night that factors including U.S. public opinion must be weighed in the case.

But he did not say when he might issue a decision on commutation.
