7300 Palestinian Prisoners Including 474 Children Inside Israeli Prisons


GAZA, July 21, 2004 (WAFA)-Ministry of Palestinian prisoners said Tuesday 
that the number of Palestinian prisoners inside the Israeli prisons is 7300.

. In a report, the ministry said that the number of prisoners inside 
Israel's prisons before the eruption of the Intifada is 748 , adding the 
number rapidly climbed to be 7300 until the period covered by its report.
.
The report affirmed that more than 2500 children were arrested since the 
outbreak of the Intifada and that 474 of them are still in Israeli jails.
.
"27 children are administratively detained, while 301 others are in custody 
until their trial and 146 were sentenced to several cruel sentences", the 
report said.
.
The report also revealed that 42 children are badly in need of medical care 
and treatment and 88% of the children arrested were severely tortured and 
assaulted, which caused physical and psychological troubles after being 
released.

According to the report, 300 women were arrested since the Intifada started 
and that 100 women are still detained, adding that two female prisoners 
gave birth inside the prison.

The report made it clear that 167 were killed due to severe torture in the 
Israeli jails. The last one of them was Bashir Oweid who was killed in 
"Megiddo" Israeli detention Camp.

"hundreds of released prisoners are still suffering due to the effects of 
torture and ill-treatment and malnutrition", the report affirmed.
