Ambassador Jorge Valero: Organization of American States (OAS) observer 
missions were funded by the US State Department

Union Radio reports: Venezuelan Ambassador to the Organization of American 
States (OAS) Jorge Valero says that the OAS has guaranteed that their 
Presidential recall referendum observer mission “will be transparent in 
their financing, and respond to the interests of the international 
organization; that is, it will accomplish an impeccable mission.”

Valero says that the president of the OAS observers mission, Valter Pecly 
Moreira, “is a career diplomat ... that’s why we should have faith in him, 
because he’s acted within OAS regulations ... he’s demonstrated that he’s a 
proven democrat ... in that sense, he deserves our confidence.”
    * Valero hopes to establish contact with his Brazilian counterpart. 
“I’m going to facilitate the meeting in the government’s name. All of the 
electoral observation missions have the government’s support.”

Venezuela's OAS representative explains that, previously, the OAS 
delegation “was financed by the US State Department ... that anomalous 
situation didn’t live up to the standards of objectivity, transparency, and 
equanimity that international observers must have. Now we have guarantees 
that this mission will be transparent. That’s what Ambassador Valter Pecly 
assured us.”

Valero believes that on August 15, Venezuelans will give “a great 
demonstration of democratic will. The political process that Hugo Chavez 
leads will not only be consolidated within the country, but it will also 
become a positive influence in the democratic development of the continent.”

Unión Radio: El embajador de Venezuela en la Organización de Estados 
Americanos, Jorge Valero, refirió que la OEA garantiza que su delegación en 
el país, "será transparente en su financiamiento y responderá a los 
intereses del organismo internacional, esto es cumplir una misión impecable".

Desde la Vicepresidencia de la República, Valero indicó que el presidente 
de la delegación observadora de la OEA, Valter Pecly Moreira, "es un 
funcionario de carrera, razón por la cual nos merece toda la confianza 
porque ha tenido un desempeño en el marco de la OEA, que demuestra que es 
un demócrata comprobado, en ese sentido nos merece toda la confianza".
    * El embajador venezolano espera establecer contacto con su par 
brasileño, "en nombre del Gobierno, voy a actuar como facilitador para el 
encuentro, para que todas las misiones de observación electoral tengan todo 
el respaldo del Ejecutivo que en estos momentos estoy anunciando".

Explicó que anteriormente la delegación veedora de la OEA, "fue financiada 
por el Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos, y esta situación anómala 
desdecía de la objetividad, transparencia y ecuanimidad que debe tener 
siempre la observación internacional, ahora tenemos garantías de que esta 
misión será transparente, así nos lo aseguró el embajador Valter Pecly".

En opinión de Jorge Valero, los venezolanos darán este 15 de agosto, 
durante la celebración del referéndum revocatorio, "una gran demostración 
de voluntad democrática y el proceso político que lidera Hugo Chávez no 
sólo se consolidará en el país, sino que se convertirá en un factor que 
incidirá de forma positiva en el desarrollo democrático del continente".
