SAN JUAN - Un residente de Puerto Rico fue citado 
a comparecer en junio ante un gran jurado en 
Nueva York, denunció hoy una coalición de organizaciones independentistas.

Michael González Cruz, portavoz de la coalición 
Mesa de Solidaridad, indicó que el 
puertorriqueño, cuyo nombre no será divulgado por 
el momento por razones personales, fue citado a comparecer el 13 de junio.

  “Que sepamos, es la primera citación en Puerto 
Rico que tiene que ver con este caso”, manifestó 
a Prensa Asociada en referencia a la muerte 
violenta de Filiberto Ojeda Ríos a manos de un 
agente del FBI en un operativo para arrestarlo en 
su residencia en Hormigueros en 2005.

Mesa de Solidaridad está integrado por 
representantes de once organizaciones 
independentistas que el viernes realizaron 
protestas para condenar lo que llaman la continua 
intervención del FBI con luchadores por la independencia de Puerto Rico.

Según la coalición, las intervenciones del FBI 
son parte de un patrón de hostigamiento a 
independentistas a partir de operativo federal en 
que un agente mató de un tiro a Ojeda Ríos el 23 
de septiembre de 2005, día en que conmemora el Grito de Lares.

Las protestas en San Juan, Mayagüez y Ponce se 
realizaron en ocasión de la citación del boricua 
residente en Texas Elliot Monteverde a comparecer 
la mañana del viernes ante un Gran Jurado en Nueva York.

“Monteverde fue acompañado de su abogado, Rutgers 
Wareham, quien llevó un documento planteando que 
su cliente no conocía la autoridad del gran 
jurado y que se amparaba en la Quinta Enmienda, y 
el fiscal, ante esa situación, decidió posponer 
indefinidamente la citación”, explicó González.

Detalló que Monteverde se crió en Mayagüez y 
estudió derecho en la Universidad de Rutgers, 
Nueva Jersey, y durante la lucha por expulsar a 
la Marina de Guerra de Vieques, sirvió en Nueva 
York como coordinador de una coalición de 
personas y organizaciones que se unieron a esa lucha.

El caso de Monteverde se suma al de los jóvenes 
independentistas Tania Frontera y Christopher 
Torres, cuya comparecencia en enero ante un gran 
jurado de Nueva York también fue aplazada indefinidamente.

Entre las organizaciones que integran la 
coalición, figura el Partido Independentista 
Puertorriqueño, el Movimiento Independentista 
Nacional Hostosiano, la Nueva Escuela, el Comité 
de Derechos Humanos de Puerto Rico, el Frente 
Socialista, la Federación de Universitarios Pro 
Independencia y la Coordinadora Nacional de las 
Vigilias por la Dignidad Filiberto Ojeda Ríos, entre otras.

SAN JUAN - A resident of Puerto Rico was 
subpoenaed to appear in June at a grand jury in 
New York, denounced today a coalition of independentista organizations.

Michael González Cruz, spokesperson for the 
coalition Table of Solidarity, indicated that the 
Puerto Rican, whose name will not be divulged at 
the moment for personal reasons, was subpoenaed to appear June 13.

“As far as we know, it is the first subpoena in 
Puerto Rico related to this case,” he told the 
Associated Press in reference to the violent 
death of Filiberto Ojeda Ríos at the hands of an 
FBI agent in an operation to arrest him at his 
residence in Hormigueros in 2005.

Table of Solidarity is comprised of 
representatives of eleven independentista 
organizations which on Friday carried out 
protests to condemn what they call the continuous 
intervention of the FBI into the lives of those 
who struggle for the independence of Puerto Rico.

According to the coalition, the FBI’s 
interventions are part of a pattern of harassment 
of independentistas since the federal operation 
in which an agent shot Ojeda Ríos to death on 
September 23, 2005, the day the Grito de Lares is commemorated.

Protests in San Juan, Mayagüez and Ponce were 
carried out on the occasion of the subpoena of a 
Puerto Rican resident of Texas, Elliot 
Monteverde, to appear Friday morning before the Grand Jury in New York.

“Monteverde was accompanied by his attorney, 
Rutgers [sic] Wareham, who took a document 
positing that his client did not recognize the 
authority of the grand jury and that he was 
invoking the Fifth Amendment, and the prosecutor, 
given this situation, decided to indefinitely 
postpone the subpoena,” explained González.

He detailed that Monteverde was raised in 
Mayagüez and studied law at Rutgers University in 
New Jersey, and that during the struggle to oust 
the Navy from Vieques, he served in New York as 
coordinator of a coalition of people and organizations united in that struggle.

Monteverde’s case is added to that of the young 
independentistas Tania Frontera and Christopher 
Torres, whose appearances in January before a 
grand jury in New York were also indefinitely continued.

The organizations that form the coalition include 
the Puerto Rican Independence Party, the National 
Hostos Independentista Movement, The New School, 
the Human Rights Committee of Puerto Rico, the 
Socialist Front, the Federation of Pro 
Independence University Students, and the 
National Coordinating Committee of Vigils for 
Dignity Filiberto Ojeda Ríos, among others.
