Fighting between groups in the Gaza Strip and the Israeli army has
continued today.
Two "Grad" rockets were fired at the city of Be'er Sheva, and a
number of mortars were launched into the western Negev from Gaza. A
total of one minor injury and modest damage have been reported from
the incident. The group Islamic Jihad has claimed responsibility for
the attacks. In a statement, Islamic Jihad claimed that the rockets
had been launched "in retaliation for the ongoing Israeli aggression."
The Israeli air force and army have both attacked the Gaza strip in
response. One man, allegedly a member of Islamic Jihad's military
wing, was injured in the attacks.
The attack is the latest in an escalating round of violence. Earlier,
the Hamas-led government in Gaza, and the Al Qassam Brigades, the
armed wing of Hamas movement, stated that they would commit to a
truce should Israel halt its assaults on Gaza. Given the present
violence, this prospect is rapidly fading.
On Tuesday, a wave of Israeli military escalation targeting the Gaza
Strip led to the deaths of nine Palestinians, including three
children. At least 38 Palestinians, including six women and fifteen
children, were injured in a number of Israeli attacks targeting the
Gaza Strip in the last 4 days. Israeli politicians are said to be
considering a further escalation, perhaps resulting in a 'Cast Lead 2'.

Ismail Haniyya, head of the Palestinian government in the Gaza Strip,
demanded the Security Council to take serious and fast measures to
ensure the protection of the Palestinian people suffering from
ongoing Israeli attacks.
In a brief statement to the media on Tuesday evening, Haniyya said
that "the Security Council did not hesitate in making and
implementing decision to protect the Libyan people, and must act to
protect the Palestinians".
He also called on activating and implementing the Goldstone report on
Israel's war on Gaza two years ago, and called on the people in the
Arab world, engaged in revolutions against their oppressive regimes,
to regard the Palestinian cause as a high priority.
The Hamas leader also urged the new leadership in Egypt to open the
Rafah Border Terminal and enable the transfer of construction
materials, medical equipment, medications and supplies, and all
needed essential supplies into the Gaza strip.
Nine Palestinians, including three children, were killed on Tuesday
as the Israeli army bombarded several areas in the Gaza Strip; dozens
of residents, including children, women and elderly were injured.
Adham Abu Slamiyya, spokesperson of the Medical Services in Gaza,
identified four of the slain residents as Mohammad Jihad al-Hilo, 11,
Yasser Aahed al-Hilo, 16, Yasser Hamed al-Hilo, 50, and Mohammad
Saber Harara, 20.
Four fighters, members of the Quds Briagdes, the armed wing of the
Islamic Jihad, were killed in Al Zeitoun neighborhood, in Gaza City,
in an Israeli military attack that was carried out on Wednesday evening.
The the Brigades identified the fighters as Adham Fayiz al-Harazeen,
Mohammad Akram Aabed, Saadi Mahmoud Hallas, and Mohammad Atiyya al-Harazeen.
The Brigades added that another fighter was seriously wounded when
Israeli drones fired missiles at fighters in the eastern areas of Gaza city.
The fighter's left leg was severed due to the blast and was moved to
the intensive care unit. Israeli military sources claimed that the
targeted fighters were preparing to launch a Grad missile into southern Israel.
At least 38 Palestinians, including six women and fifteen children,
were injured in a number of Israeli attacks targeting the Gaza Strip
in the last three days.
Several children were wounded when the Israeli Air Force fired a
missile at children playing football in their neighborhood in Gaza City.
The army also fired another missile that hit a home in the
neighborhood leading to more injuries; all of the wounded were moved
to the Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza.
