"We didn't cross the border; the border crossed us."

Perhaps you've heard that phrase and wondered what
exactly it means. How much do you know about the
history of the "Borderlands," the Spanish invasion of
the Americas, the Mexican War of Independence from
Spain, and the United States' military invasion and
appropriation of the northern half of Mexico,
including California?

In the new edition of her book, ROOTS OF RESISTANCE: A
HISTORY OF LAND TENURE IN NEW MEXICO, revisionist
historian and activist Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz tells the
story of the occupation of what is now called the US
Southwest by successive waves of colonizers, each with
their own governing rules and institutions, and most
importantly, fierce and persistent resistance by the
indigenous communities and nations that continues
today. Using Marxist insights and the history of one
state, New Mexico, the book provides a picture of the
patterns of land tenure that have prevailed throughout
the region, from a spiritual necessity to a commodity;
how the coming of capitalist United States disrupted
traditional self-subsistence village economies, and
how foreign interests transformed the region into a
center of agribusiness and military-industrial
capitalism.

discussion. Please send to your Bay Area friends and
