Southwest by successive waves of colonizers, each with<br>
their own governing rules and institutions, and most<br>
importantly, fierce and persistent resistance by the<br>
indigenous communities and nations that continues<br>
today. Using Marxist insights and the history of one<br>
state, New Mexico, the book provides a picture of the<br>
patterns of land tenure that have prevailed throughout<br>
the region, from a spiritual necessity to a commodity;<br>
how the coming of capitalist United States disrupted<br>
traditional self-subsistence village economies, and<br>
how foreign interests transformed the region into a<br>
center of agribusiness and military-industrial<br>
capitalism.<br><br>
