Camp Pumziko (poom zee koh)

Pumziko is a kiSwahili word that means “to come in
peace, ready to defend”.

Camp Pumziko has grown tremendously since 1994. The
progress can be measured by the campers who return
each year and through the dedication of youth that
attended as campers and now return to be counselors.

Purpose:
• To give youth from our communities an opportunity to
expand their knowledge and experience in a wholesome
and structured environment geared towards building
character and self-esteem.
• To offer a curriculum that includes Afrikan history,
cultural awareness and physical development.
• To bring youth into contact with adults committed to
being positive role models, thus fulfilling a void in
many of their lives.
• To provide a meaningful alternative to summers of
“just hanging out” with “nothing to do”.
• To teach survival skills for functioning in a system
that has failed our youth.

Pumziko Retreat Center

Purpose:
To provide grassroots organizations a private space to
plan, coordinate and strategize on next steps toward
building a movement. The Center will contain several
conference and meeting rooms, a kitchen, cafeteria,
rooms for lodging, a research library, and a
communications center.

If you would like to make as major contribution to the
