SUMMARY:Book Talk: The Memoirs of Robert and Mabel Williams: African American Freedom\, Armed Resistance\, and International Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:A book talk will be hosted from 1:00 – 2:00 pm in 650 Social Sciences Building. A small reception will follow with light refreshments at 2:00 pm in 675 Social Sciences Building\, the Erskine A. Peters Reading Room. \n  \nSpeaker: Akinyele K. Umoja\, Professor\, Africana Studies\, Georgia State University\n\nSpeaker: Lisa Williams\, Daughter-in-Law of Robert and Mabel Williams\n\nRSVP: https://events.berkeley.edu/africam/event/304147-book-talk-the-memoirs-of-robert-and-mabel-williams\n\n  \nBorn in Jim Crow–era Monroe\, North Carolina\, Robert F. Williams and Mabel R. Williams were the state’s most legendary African American freedom fighters. The Williamses’ leadership in Monroe was just the beginning of a lifelong pursuit of freedom and justice for Black people in the United States and for oppressed populations throughout the world. Their activism foreshadowed major developments in the civil rights and Black Power movements\, including Malcolm X’s advocacy of fighting oppression “by any means necessary\,” the emergence of the Black Panther Party\, and Black solidarity with Third World liberation movements. \nRobert documented his experiences in Monroe in his classic 1962 book\, Negroes with Guns\, and completed a draft of his memoir\, While God Lay Sleeping\, months before his death in 1996. Mabel began a memoir of her own before her death in 2014. The family selected John Bracey Jr.\, Akinyele K. Umoja\, and Gloria Aneb House to edit and complete the manuscripts\, which are presented together in this book\, offering a gripping portrait of these pioneering freedom fighters that is both deeply intimate and a fierce call to action in the ongoing fight against racial injustice.

DESCRIPTION:The Tribunal Project\, The Ethnic Studies Library and the Freedom Archives invite you to an art opening and book celebration. \nThe exhibit and accompanying book is about movement building inspired from the 1992 Tribunal in San Francisco to dismantle the legacy of Christopher Columbus and 500 years of genocide. As a retrospective\, this book accompanies an exhibit of art works and documents at the Ethnic Studies Library on the UC Berkeley campus to commemorate the 1992 Tribunal as an international call to dismantle the colonial legacy of Christopher Columbus and the quincentennial Myth of Discovery. \nBy reactivating the legacy of the 1992 Tribunal\, this project of Tribunal Rising\, claims our sovereign rights as a people to live free from terror in our neighborhoods and around the world. In it\, we see the special role of the arts to raise our song\, theater\, poetry often recited live\, and in artworks that live on in posters\, magazines and prints as common reminders of our creativity and capacities to create a better world. We bring imagination\, the possibility of change\, and the advancement of what we know to be true to rejuvenate the energetic cycles of life. \n  \n \n

Over half were women. \nMAESTRA (2012) explores this story through the personal testimonies of the young women who went out to teach literacy in rural communities across the island – and found themselves deeply transformed in the process. \nThe Cuban Literacy Campaign is an important but little-known chapter in the history of the Americas. Catherine Murphy has created a project with rare and intimate access to this history. Her documentary MAESTRA brings together moving interviews with living witnesses\, beautiful archival film footage\, and Catherine’s compelling storytelling. Based on personal testimonies of teachers and students from the campaign\, her film will preserve the oral histories of a generation that will soon be gone. At 20 years old\, Joan (pronounced Jo-Ann) Little was incarcerated in North Carolina when she killed a white jailer who she said tried to rape her. Her trial drew international attention\, becoming a rallying point for civil rights\, women’s rights and prison reform. The case brought together activists\, including Angela Davis and Rosa Parks\, and catalyzed an international conversation about sexual assault and racial justice that has reverberations to this day. With rare archival footage\, contemporary interviews and the folk anthem that carried her cause\, FREE JOAN LITTLE captures the spirit of resistance that made history. For the first time\, all of the previous years are compiled and available now at the Freedom Archives. Featuring vibrant artwork\, moving essays\, poems and historical dates commemorating radical history\, each Certain Days calendar is itself an archive of resistance. \nModerated by Certain Days Collective member Josh Davidson\, this panel features: \n\nCertain Days founders and former political prisoners Herman Bell and David Gilbert\,\nformer political prisoner and Freedom Archives co-founder Claude Marks\,\ncalendar contributor\, lifelong organizer and prisoner supporter dequi kioni-sadiki\nand former political prisoner and calendar contributor Laura Whitehorn.\n\nConnect: Certain Days – Website | Freedom Archives – Website \nAbout the panelists: \ndequi kioni-sadiki is a Coordinating Committee member of the Spirit of Mandela Coalition\, the former chair of the Malcolm X Commemoration Committee and leader of the Sekou Odinga Defense Committee which waged a successful campaign for the release of her husband. A consistent coalition-builder and organizer\, kioni-sadiki is a retired educator with the NYC Department of Education and a member of the Jericho Movement to Free All Political Prisoners. She co-edited Look for Me in the Whirlwind: From the Panther 21 to 21st Century Revolutions and is a contributor to Black Power Afterlives: The Enduring Significance of the Black Panther Party. \nHerman Bell is a former member of both the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army\, and he was imprisoned for forty-five years. Bell was captured in New Orleans in 1973\, and eventually he\, Jalil Muntaqim and Albert Nuh Washington were convicted of attacks on police. He was also implicated in the San Francisco 8 case and pleaded guilty to a lesser offense. He spent five years imprisoned in the federal system\, in the Marion control unit for two of those years\, before spending decades in various New York State maximum security prisons. While imprisoned he was committed to community work\, and he is a founding member of the Victory Gardens Project and the Certain Days Collective. He was released in 2018\, after his eighth parole hearing. \nClaude Marks was imprisoned for his involvement in an escape conspiracy to free Puerto Rican independentista and political prisoner Oscar López Rivera. Marks has worked in radical media since the late 1960s and is co-founder and co-director of the Freedom Archives. In 2016\, he traveled to Palestine as part of an anti-prison delegation that focused on political imprisonment and solidarity between prisoners in the US and Palestine. He has also worked to free numerous political prisoners and continues to fight for prison abolition. \nDavid Gilbert is a lifelong anti-imperialist who was captured and imprisoned as a result of an attempted expropriation of a Brinks truck in Nyack\, New York\, in 1981. Gilbert was sentenced to 75 years to life but his sentence was commuted by outgoing Governor Cuomo\, and he was released from prison after forty years in November 2021. While in prison\, he was a cofounder of the Certain Days Collective\, and he also helped pioneer AIDS awareness programs that saved thousands of lives in prisons across the country. While incarcerated\, David wrote three books\, No Surrender: Writings from an Anti-Imperialist Political Prisoner; Love and Struggle: My Life in SDS\, the Weather Underground\, and Beyond; and Looking at the U.S. White Working Class Historically. \nLaura Whitehorn served 14+ years in federal prison for the “Resistance Conspiracy” case\, which included attacks against US government institutions\, the Israeli Aircraft Industries and a notoriously racist NY police agency. Released in 1999\, Whitehorn helped found Release Aging People in Prison (RAPP) and works in various projects for the release of US-held political prisoners. She edited The War Before by late Black Panther political prisoner and organizer Safiya Bukhari\, and helped organize the 2014 Interference Archive exhibit “Self-Determination Inside/Out\,” which showed how the struggles of incarcerated people have affected and shaped social movements on the outside. Whitehorn was a member of the Prison\, Labor\, and Academic Delegation to Palestine in 2016\, along with her partner\, the writer Susie Day. She has contributed to Certain Days. \nJosh Davidson is an anarchist and abolitionist\, a member of the Certain Days Collective\, and part of the Children’s Art Project with political prisoner Oso Blanco. He has edited two books\, Rattling the Cages: Oral Histories of North American Political Prisoners and A Clean Hell: Anarchy and Abolition in America’s Most Notorious Prison\, both with former political prisoner Eric King\, and is the author of the forthcoming children’s book on abolition\, A Cage Is a Cage. Davidson works with the Zinn Education Project\, which promotes the teaching of people’s history in classrooms and provides free lessons and resources for educators.
