Across the world today, people are rising up against the devastating effects of Neo-liberalism. Chile is an especially interesting example as many of the current practices of global neo-liberal policies originated under General Augusto Pinochet (1973 – 1991). In this piece by Jules Retzlaff, Retzlaff, using archival footage and audio from Freedom Archives, reflects on the connections between the current political moment and underlying intentions of the 1973 coup d’etat. Archival images paired with both archival and modern footage demonstrate the legacy of resistance to fascism and struggle for economic and social justice embedded in the progressive left movement in Chile. Interviews are taken from Freedom Archives “Chile: Promise of Freedom“, an hour long reflection on the Coup and the future of Chile, available for purchase and download on Freedom Archive’s website.
