                  Colombian government released 17 members of the FARC
                  guerrillas Wednesday night, almost two months after
                  the rebels were </span><a
href="http://www.telesurtv.net/english/news/Pardoned-FARC-Members-Still-in-Jail-say-Rebel-Leaders-20151226-0004.html">granted
                  a presidential pardon</a>. </p>
              <p dir="ltr"><span
                  id="docs-internal-guid-2ac77586-64bb-5b3d-dcc5-de2e484880a4">The

                  insurgents are the first group to be released among
                  the 30 Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or
                  FARC, members who were pardoned by President Juan
                  Manuel Santos in November.</span> </p>
              <p dir="ltr"><span
                  id="docs-internal-guid-2ac77586-64bb-5b3d-dcc5-de2e484880a4">Among

                  this first group of rebels include 10 men from La
                  Picota prison and 7 women from the El Buen Pastor
                  prison, both of which are located in the capital
                  Bogota. The guerrillas were all incarcerated on
                  charges such as rebellion, illegal possession of
                  weapons or private use of official army uniforms.  </span>
              </p>
              <p dir="ltr"><span
                  id="docs-internal-guid-2ac77586-64bb-5b3d-dcc5-de2e484880a4">Four

                  of newly released insurgents will continue onto to
                  Havana, Cuba in the next days to participate in the
                  ongoing peace talks between the FARC and the
                  government. The two sides have just entered the final
                  stretch of their negotiations and have set a March 23
                  deadline to sign a final peace deal – what many hope
                  will bring the country one step closer to ending over
                  50 years of civil war.    </span> </p>
              <p dir="ltr"><span
                  id="docs-internal-guid-2ac77586-64bb-5b3d-dcc5-de2e484880a4">President

                  Santos said pardoning the 30 rebels was a “goodwill
                  gesture,” to show the government's dedication to the
                  peace negotiations. They were released on condition
                  that they do not return to guerrilla ranks.  </span> </p>
              <p dir="ltr"><span
                  id="docs-internal-guid-2ac77586-64bb-5b3d-dcc5-de2e484880a4">The
                  FARC has criticized the government for the delayed
                  release of the pardoned insurgents, and demand that
                  the rest of</span><a
href="http://www.telesurtv.net/english/news/FARC-Proposes-Humanitarian-Prisoner-Release-20160117-0021.html">
                  their members be released</a>, particularly those
                suffering from serious health issues. </p>
              <p dir="ltr"><span
                  id="docs-internal-guid-2ac77586-64bb-5b3d-dcc5-de2e484880a4">According
                  to the FARC, there are some 1,200 insurgents currently
                  serving time in prisons across the country.</span> </p>
              <p dir="ltr"><span
                  id="docs-internal-guid-2ac77586-64bb-5b3d-dcc5-de2e484880a4">The
                  Minister of Justice Yesid Reyes assured that the rest
                  of the pardoned detainees will be released by the end
                  of the month.</span> </p>
