<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
ofreció absolutamente nada a Carlos Alberto Torres y Haydée Beltrán,
quienes
Clinton.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Attorney Eduardo

the
United States, what we tell the Interagency Task Force, what we tell
the people
of the United States, is that among diverse sectors in Puerto Rico
there is
broad consensus for the release of Oscar López Rivera, that it’s true,
it’s not
just a metaphor, and the presence of all of you here supporting that

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">And so it was.
Among those
present were the mayor-elect of San Juan, Carmen Yulín Cruz, the next
president
of the Senate, attorney Eduardo Bhatia, both from the Popular

attorneys Juan

Clarisa

attorney Jan Susler, and U.S. Congressman from the district of Chicago,

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">In addition to
those already

attorney Villanueva stated that first of all he wanted to make crystal

that it was incorrect to say that the fundamental reason why Oscar is
probably
still in prison is because he didn’t accept conditions and because he
was
convicted of violent crimes. He focused attention on the fact that when
then
president Bill Clinton released the group of 11 Puerto Rican political

who were also in prison and were his compañeros in the struggle and
friends
from childhood, which is why Oscar wouldn’t leave prison until his

been offered.” But also, after Carlos Alberto and Haydée were released,
Oscar
went to the Parole Commission, which explicitly implies that he would
accept
some conditions, as “it’s not possible to be paroled without
conditions.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">As for the third
point, he
was emphatic in stating the López Rivera was convicted of seditious
conspiracy,
which is a conceptual crime that has been used almost exclusively with
Puerto
Ricans, since the 1930's. That accusation means opposing the government
of the
United States in Puerto Rico under the theory that a colonial
relationship
exists and that internationally colonialism is considered a crime
against
humanity. In the U.S. penal system, trying to snatch a possession of
the United
States is what is known as seditious conspiracy.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">He denounced that
at Oscar’s
parole hearing convened by the Parole Commission, they took some
supposed
victims of a violent event that took place in the 1980's which he was
not
accused of. “That is what has happened in Oscar’s case, that they’ve
been using
arguments that don’t line up in his case and which hasn’t been
convicted of,”
Villanueva noted.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">“Independently of
the status
preference that each and every one of us may have, the truth is that
conversations
have begun with the government of the United States to see how we
reformulate
the political juridical relationship between Puerto Rico and the United
States.
It is the perfect and propitious occasion for president Obama to make a
gesture
of reconciliation and good will to the People of Puerto Rico, and
release Oscar
for Christmas, if possible before the year’s end,” expressed the
spokesperson
for the Human Rights Committee.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Attorney Ana Irma
Rivera Lassén
referred to the reasons which lead López Rivera to prison, the way in
which he
was accused, and the conditions of his confinement, as a violation of
his Human
Rights, about which the people of Puerto Rico should be indignant and
sign
letters supporting his release. She reaffirmed the Bar Association’s
commitment
to continue supporting his release and denouncing all the violations
involved
in his case.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Meanwhile, the new

San Juan, who, it is known, dedicated her victory to Oscar and who
writes
continually to the White House supporting his release, announced that
during
the upcoming Fiestas of San Sebastián Street, they will be collecting
signatures supporting his release. Cruz recognized that the PPD as an
institution passed a resolution on June 12, 2012, committing to work
for Oscar
López Rivera’s release, but it wasn’t made known previously to avoid
people
thinking they were politicizing the situation. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Meanwhile, the
President and
Vice-president of the Mayors’ Association, a group of PPD mayors,
Comerío Mayor
Josean Santiago and Hormigueros Mayor Pedro García, reiterated their
support
for Oscar’s release and committed to pass a new resolution with the 47

who are current members, as well as to have every City Council pass a
resolution.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The next President
of the
Senate also committed that the Senate would support efforts for his
release.
Attorney Bhatia expressed that this decade has brought important
lessons in
Puerto Rico, and that one of them is that unity can be achieved.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Appealing to his
party’s
historical commitment to the campaign for the release of the Puerto
Rican
political prisoners, attorney Dalmau made it known that the PIP
prepared to
make visits at the international level, but that for diplomatic reasons
he
couldn’t reveal the names of the countries. He expressed that in
addition to a
political commitment for Oscar’s release, there is also a human
commitment.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">“I am Oscar López
Rivera’s
only daughter, which is a matter of honor and pride for me. What people
have
said at the microphone here is very true: only with each and every one
of our
voices, united in a single voice, will we fulfill the dream that my
Father come
home to us, to my daughter, my family, in San Sebastián, where he
should be.
Thirty years is too long for me to be away from my Father. So it’s
time, with
your help, for my Father to come home,” expressed Clarisa López, deeply
touching those present.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Another statement
that moved
the public was that of attorney Jan Susler. “In the United States I
always tell
people that the Puerto Rican people are united in their support for
Oscar’s
release. It’s one thing to say it, and it’s another to feel it. Today I
feel
it.” Susler, who has been the attorney for the Puerto Rican political
prisoners
who were Oscar’s co-defendants, commented that the next time Oscar
phones, she’ll
try “not to cry” when she lets him know the love people have for him
and the
support that exists for his release. She said that it was important to
let him
know about these feelings, which “give him much support so that he can
carry
out his patriotic efforts.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">To conclude,
congressman Luis
Gutiérrez insisted that he and his compañeros, representatives Nydia
Velázquez
and José Serrano, are together in efforts for Oscar’s release, as is
the
current resident commissioner Pedro Pierluisi.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">“I’m not going to
let Oscar

Gutiérrez,
challenging those who doubt that we Puerto Ricans “are stronger and
more
efficient.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>
