First, Leonard and I want to thank you for the outpouring of<br>
support. With your help, we're hopeful that Leonard will receive<br>
proper medical care from prison authorities.<br><br>
Within the last several days, Leonard has finally been able to see<br>
a doctor. Together, they discussed Leonard's care and reviewed his<br>
medications and such. However, the issue of the diabetes
testing<br>
kit remains.<br><br>
Citing security reasons, U.S. Penitentiary-Lewisburg will not allow<br>
Leonard to have a diabetes testing kit in his cell. But Leonard
is<br>
not asking that he be allowed to have a kit in his cell.
Often,<br>
when he goes to the infirmary, there is no one there to help him<br>
and he has to keep returning to the infirmary until he's able to<br>
speak with medical personnel. The infirmary has a
"general" kit,<br>
too. It's used by other prisoners and due to the embedded memory in<br>
the monitor, Leonard could be getting false readings. We're asking<br>
that Leonard be allowed to have his own kit at the pharmacy for<br>
accurate readings, as well as easy and regular access. In this<br>
way, he'll be able to test himself three or four times a day and<br>
hopefully achieve a balanced blood glucose level.<br><br>
Please continue to urge prison authorities to provide Leonard with<br>
a diabetes test kit so that he can control his diabetes. We also<br>
want to see to it that Leonard receives diabetic shoes that will<br>
help him with his diabetes-related foot problems. If the
prison<br>
cannot provide such things, the family will work with an approved<br>
medical supply company to see to it that Leonard gets what he
needs.<br><br>

Amnesty International considers Leonard Peltier a "political<br>
prisoner" who should be "immediately and unconditionally<br>
released." Leonard Peltier, now a great-grandfather, is a citizen
of<br>
the Anishinabe and Dakota/Lakota Nations and a tireless advocate for<br>
Indigenous Rights. A participant in the American Indian
Movement,<br>
he went to assist the Oglala Lakota people on the Pine Ridge Indian<br>
Reservation in the mid-1970s where, on June 26, 1975, a tragic<br>
shoot out occurred. He was wrongfully convicted in the deaths<br>
of two agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and has been<br>
illegally incarcerated since 1976. Federal prosecutors have twice<br>
admitted before the Courts of Appeal that they don't know who fired<br>
the fatal shots. The government also has admitted that it isn't<br>
known what role Leonard Peltier "may have played" in the
incident.<br>
Since his politically motivated prosecution and conviction,<br>
proof of fabricated and suppressed evidence, as well as coerced<br>
testimony, has been uncovered. The Courts of Appeal have repeatedly<br>
acknowledged investigative and prosecutorial misconduct in this
case,<br>
but have failed to take corrective action. A model prisoner, Leonard<br>
continues to maintain his innocence and has consequently been denied<br>
fair consideration for parole. Join with numerous internationally<br>
recognized human rights organizations, civil rights leaders,<br>
celebrities and other luminaries who have called for the immediate<br>
