WASHINGTON - Las casi tres décadas de encarcelamiento de Oscar López y
Carlos Alberto Torres son motivo suficiente para que la Organización de
las Naciones Unidas (ONU) intervenga a favor de los presos políticos
boricuas, advirtió el Comité Pro Derechos Humanos de Puerto Rico.<br>

La organización divulgó ayer la presentación que ha enviado y que
presentará formalmente el próximo lunes ante el Comité de Descolonización
de la ONU en reclamo de la excarcelación de los prisioneros políticos
boricuas.<br>
<br>
El Comité de Descolonización de la ONU tiene previsto sesionar el lunes
para discutir una nueva resolución que reconocería el derecho de Puerto
Rico a su libre determinación e independencia y reclamaría que el caso
boricua sea discutido en 2009, como un asunto independiente, ante la
Asamblea General de la organización internacional.<br>

En momentos en que la Casa Blanca y precandidatos a la presidencia
aceptan que en Puerto Rico “no hay democracia plena”, el portavoz del
Comité Pro Derechos Humanos, Eduardo Villanueva, afirmó que urge como
parte de cualquier proceso en torno al futuro político de Puerto Rico,
liberar a prisioneros que han combatido un régimen que “quienes lo
representan y lo administran admiten que es antidemocrático”.<br>

En informes publicados en diciembre de 2005 y 2007, la Casa Blanca ha
descrito a Puerto Rico como un mero territorio de Estados Unidos, sujeto
a la voluntad del Congreso, que incluso pudiera regalar el país a otra
nación.<br>

“A nuestros prisioneros políticos se les ha mantenido por 28 y 29 años
presos, alejados de su familia, sometidos durante largos años a períodos
de privación de sueño, de sensaciones cromáticas y sensoriales, privados
de atención médica adecuada, interceptadas sus llamadas telefónicas y sus
comunicaciones como si fueran criminales vulgares, aun cuando (Estados
Unidos) sabe que son combatientes por la autodeterminación de los
puertorriqueños”, agregó Villanueva en la ponencia enviada ante el Comité
de Descolonización.<br>

A la sesión de la semana próxima ha anunciado su comparecencia el
gobernador Aníbal Acevedo Vilá.<br>

WASHINGTON - The almost three decades of imprisonment of Oscar López and
Carlos Alberto Torres are sufficient reason for the United Nations to
intervene in favor of the Puerto Rican political prisoners, warned the
Human Rights Committee of Puerto Rico.<br>

The organization revealed yesterday the presentation it has sent and will
formally present next Monday before the Decolonization Committee of the
U.N. seeking the release of the Puerto Rican political prisoners.<br>
<br>
The Decolonization Committee of the U.N. has scheduled Monday to discuss
a new resolution which will recognize the right of Puerto Rico to its
self determination and indepenence and will call for the case of Puerto
Rico to be discussed in 2009, as an independent matter, at the General
Assembly of the international organization.<br>
<br>
At a time when the White House and presidential candidates accept that in
Puerto Rico, “there is no full democracy,” the spokesperson for the Human
Rights Committee, Eduardo Villanueva, affirmed that part of any process
regarding the political future of Puerto Rico should be the release of
prisoners, who have fought a regime that “those who represent and
administer it admit is anti democratic.”<br>
<br>
In reports published in December of 2005 and 2007, the White House has
described Puerto Rico as a mere territory of the United States, subject
to the will of Congress, which includes that it could give the country to
another nation.<br>

“They have kept our political prisoners for 28 and 29 years behind bars,
far from their families, subjected for many years to periods of sleep
deprivation, sensory deprivation, denial of adequate medical care, and
monitored telephone calls and communication as if they were common
criminals, even when (the United States) knows that they are combatants
for the self determination of Puerto Rico,” added Villanueva in the
presentation sent to the Decolonization Committee.<br>
<br>
Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá has announced that he will attend next
week’s session.<br><br>
