El puertorriqueño Avelino González Claudio fue extraditado hoy a
Hartford, Connecticut, informó el martes el portavoz del Comité de Amigos
y Familiares, Hilton Fernández Diamante.<br>

El acusado, quien estuvo prófugo por 22 años, fue arrestado hace tres
semanas por supuestamente participar en el robo de siete millones de
dólares de un camión blindado de la compañía de transporte de valores
Wells Fargo en Hartford, Connecticut, el 12 de septiembre de 1983.<br>
<br>
El FBI vincula a González Claudio con la organización clandestina
Ejército Popular Boricua-Los Macheteros, cuyo líder, Filiberto Ojeda
Ríos, murió por el disparo de un agente del FBI el 23 de septiembre de
2005.<br>
<br>
El magistrado federal Marcos López había denegado la petición de González
Claudio de salir bajo fianza, y ordenó su extradición inmediata a ese
estado.<br>

El pasado sábado, González Claudio recibió una visita legal que confirmó
que aún estaba confinado en la unidad de máxima seguridad de la
institución federal Metropolitan Correccional Center (MDC), informó
Fernández Diamante en un comunicado.<br>

El lunes, el licenciado Juan R. Acevedo intentó reunirse con su
representado y fue notificado que Avelino fue trasladado al Tribunal
Federal para que los alguaciles tomaran jurisdicción en el proceso de
extradición, agregó.<br>

"La extradición de Avelino va en contraposición de su declaración
expresada al magistrado López el día de su arresto cuando declaró su
condición de preso político y solicitó se valide lo establecido por el
derecho internacional de reconocer y respetar las luchas de los pueblos
por su derecho a la libertad y de ser juzgado en su patria", dijo
Fernández Diamante.<br>

"Al compañero le han violentado su derecho a recibir la visita de su
familia inmediata. Lo sacaron de Puerto Rico sin la oportunidad de
reunirse con su esposa e hijos o por lo menos hablarles
telefónicamente", denunció el portavoz del comité.<br>

Agregó que la familia está en espera de que se le comunique el destino de
González Claudio.<br>
<br>
El FBI considera a los Macheteros como una organización terrorista. Por
su parte, el movimiento independentista ha acusado a Estados Unidos de
persecución política durante décadas.<br>

Puerto Rican Avelino González Claudio was extradited today to Hartford,
Connecticut, according to the Tuesday report of Hilton Fernández
Diamante, spokesperson for the Committee of Friends and Family.<br>
<br>
The accused, who was a fugitive for 22 years, was arrested three weeks
ago for supposedly participating in the theft of seven million dollars
from an armored car belonging to the Wells Fargo armored car company in
Hartford, Connecticut on September 12, 1983.<br>
<br>
The FBI connects González Claudio with the clandestine organization
Boricua Popular Army–Macheteros, whose leader, Filiberto Ojeda Ríos, died
after an FBI agent shot him on September 23, 2005.<br>
<br>
Federal magistrate Marcos López had denied González Claudio’s motion for
bail and ordered his immediate extradition to that state.<br>
<br>
Last Saturday, González Claudio received a legal visit that confirmed he
was still held in the maximum security unit of the federal institution
Metropolitan Correctional Center (MDC), reported Fernández Diamante in a
press release.<br>

On Monday, attorney Juan R. Acevedo tried to meet with his client and was
notified that Avelino had been transferred to the Federal Court so that
the marshals could assume jurisdiction in the extradition process, he
added. <br>
<br>
“Avelino’s extradition is contrary to the statement he made to magistrate
López the day of his arrest when he declared he was a political prisoner
and asked the court to recognize the right under international law to
recognize and respect the struggle of people for their right to freedom
and to be judged in their homeland,” said Fernández Diamante.<br>

They have violated the compañero’s right to receive visits from his
immediate family. They took him away from Puerto Rico without the
opportunity to see his wife and children, or at least talk with them on
the telephone,” denounced the Committee’s spokesperson.<br>
<br>
He added that the family is waiting to be informed of González Claudio’s
destination.<br>
<br>
The FBI considers the Macheteros to be a terrorist organization. The
independence movement, on the other hand, has for decades accused the
United States of political persecution.<br><br>
