CHICAGO (AP) - A federal judge in Chicago today handed down a
21-month sentence for a medical van driver convicted of obstruction of
justice.

Fifty-4-year-old Muhammad Salah was also ordered to pay a $25,000 fine
and do a hundred hours of community service.

A federal jury in Chicago deliberated for 14 days earlier this year
before acquitting Salah and another man on racketeering conspiracy
charges that accused them of furnishing money and fresh recruits to the
Hamas (huh-MAHS') terrorist organization.

But Salah was convicted of obstruction of justice for giving false
answers during a civil lawsuit.

US District Judge Amy St. Eve today told Salah that telling the truth is
the "bedrock of our judicial system" and the judge said a stiff
sentence was needed to provide a deterrent.
