43 Days on, Hossam Ruzza continues his hunger strike amidst health

May 1, 2019

Addameer - Ramallah: Forty-three days into his hunger strike, prisoner
Hossam Ruzza, 61 years old from Nablus, faces a new deterioration in his
health condition, as confirmed by Addameer lawyer following a visit to
Ruzza in the Ramlah prison compound, on Tuesday, April 30, 2019.

Addameer's lawyer confirmed that the prisoner had lost 25 kilograms
since he began his strike on March 19. His blood glucose level has
dropped to 60, as he has begun to suffer from poor blood pumping and
liver complications. Ruzza also suffers from stomach and waist pain and
difficulty to sleep, although his heart is stable. The prison
administration transferred prisoner Ruzza to the medical section in the
Ramleh prison compound, where he underwent medical tests for blood,
urine, pressure, sugar and heartbeat.

The occupation forces arrested Hossam Ruzza on 17 April last year and
issued an administrative detention order against him, which was extended
3 times. He has passed more than a year in administrative detention.
Hossam Ruzza continues his open hunger strike, insisting on his demand
for his immediate release, while the Addameer lawyer appealed the
decision to extend his last detention.

Addameer continues to follow up the case of prisoner Hossam Ruzza,
renewing its call on the international community to pressure the
occupying state until the release of all the administrative detainees.
Especially Hossam Ruzza, as well as Mohammad Tabanga, who has been on
hunger strike since 25 March 2019, Hassan Awewi and Odeh Huroub, both on
hunger strike since 2 April 2019, all in protest of their administrative
detention. Addameer also call upon all contracting parties to the fourth
Geneva convention to pressure the occupying state in order to end the
administrative detention policy, practiced by the occupation authorities
in violation of all international law norms. A practice that represents
a tool of vengeance and torture against Palestinian prisoners.
