Israel releases Palestinian teen after 40 months of prison

Aug. 17, 2018
Seventeen-year-old Murad Alqam

JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- The Israeli authorities released a Palestinian
17-year-old boy, on Friday, after ten months of being held under house
arrest and 30 months of prison.

Murad Alqam, 17, from Beit Hanina of occupied East Jerusalem in the
central West Bank, was detained by Israeli forces in mid 2015; Alqam had
then spent nine days in prison before being transferred to house arrest
until legal procedures are over.

On April 10, 2016, Alqam turned himself in to the Israeli Prison
Services (IPS) to spend his 30-month sentence; the 17-year-old was
transferred between several Israeli prisons.

Despite having more rights on paper than Palestinian children in the
occupied West Bank who are subject to a draconian military detention
system, in practice, Jerusalem minors "do not enjoy their enshrined
rights" under a discriminatory Israeli civilian court system, according
to rights group Defense for Children International - Palestine.

According to Palestinian prisoners' rights group Addameer, 270
Palestinian children under the age of 18 (50 of whom are under the age
of 16) are currently held in Israeli prisons, out of a total of 5820
Palestinian prisoners.
