BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces released veteran Palestinian hunger
striker Khader Adnan several hours after he was detained on Monday
afternoon, the Palestinian Prisoner's Society said Tuesday. The head of
the society, Qadura Fares, told Ma'an that Adnan was detained at around
3 p.m. while driving through a checkpoint near Silwad east of Ramallah
in the occupied West Bank.Adnan does not know where he was taken, but
believed it may have been the Ofer military prison west of Ramallah. He
was later released in Nablus at around 8 p.m.Fares said the reason for
the detention was not clear. He noted that one of the stipulations of
Adnan's release from Israel's prisons last year was that he distance
himself from political activity, specifically that of the Islamic Jihad
movement.Adnan is most famous for undertaking two grueling hunger
strikes to protest his administrative detention, or internment without
charge. He was most recently released in July last year after he
undertook a 55-day hunger strike. His release was widely celebrated,
although it was only made possible after Adnan withdrew his demand that
Israel agree never to hold him in administrative detention again. The
hunger strike, which brought him near death by the time it concluded,
was the second he had carried out, following a 66-day long hunger strike
in 2012 that also ended in his release.
