*Dr. Aafia Assaulted in Prison to Point of Unconsciousness*
/June 4, 2013/
FORT WORTH: Last week, Dr. Aafia who is detained at Carswell Prison at a
US Military base in Fort Worth, United States was physically assaulted
in her prison cell and left unconscious and bleeding. She eventually
received medical care after two days and intervention by her lawyer, Ms.
Tina Foster. Dr. Aafia was visited by her lawyer within days of the
incident and is now in better condition. The Pakistani consulate in
Texas also sent a high level team to visit Dr. Aafia.
She has still not been able to visit with family members. The last
family visit was over a year ago.
This latest "incident" underscores the need for independent medical
treatment of Dr. Aafia that is outside of the prison system. It also
further highlights the urgent need for her repatriation to Pakistan
where she may serve out her sentence and the governments can avoid the
diplomatic problems that arise from incidents of this type.
Carswell prison claims it is conducting an "internal investigation into
the incident". The findings will likely remain secret.
Attack on Aafia, a slap on PML-N govt!
June 9, 2013
KARACHI - Dr Fouzia Siddiqui has termed the recent attack on Dr Aafia
Siddiqui in the US prison as a big test case for Nawaz Sharif government
for the sake of Pakistan's sovereignty and dignity.
Miss Siddiqui, who is al the chairperson of Aafia Movement Pakistan,
said that recent attack on Dr Aafia, wherein she suffered injuries, in
the US jail, was a slap on the face of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz
(PML-N) government that boasts enjoying an absolute majority.
She said the lawyer of Dr Aafia, Tina Foster, had informed the Siddiqui
family that last week Dr Aafia was physically assaulted in her Carswell
Prison cell at a US military base in Fort Worth and was reportedly left
unconscious, bleeding and eventually receiving medical care after two
day due to her intervention.
Dr Fouzia Siddiqui asked that why the PML-N government failed to take
any stance on Dr Aafia's issue, despite having a clear mandate. The
Pakistani Nation had great expectations from Mian Nawaz Sharif and hoped
his government would not show the apathy and cowardice that the previous
regime did on Aafia's issue, she added, stressing the new government to
bring Aafia home within 100 days as they had committed.
She said the attack on Dr Aafia and drone attacks in Pakistan as the
Nawaz Sharif government was taking oath, showed the real intentions of
the American administration towards Pakistan.
The Nawaz Sharif-led govt must take concrete actions to prove the
veracity of their commitment towards the cause of Pakistanis including
Dr Aafia as being firm and reliable.
She said the ex-rulers betrayed the cause of Dr Aafia and the masses
rejected them in the general elections pressing the new government to
avoid falling into the same trap of political expediencies. She said the
whole nation was waiting for Dr Aafia and it was a good opportunity for
Mian Nawaz Sharif to bring her back and win the hearts of all Pakistanis
