Hearing officer opposed the release of Oscar Lopez
Recommended that Lopez, 67, remains in prison another 15 years
By Joseph A. Delgado jdelgado at elnuevodia.com
WASHINGTON - A hearing officer recommended to the
Federal Parole Commission today, that they deny
release of Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar López Rivera.
Marc Tanner, whose recommendation goes to the
three members of the Board, made the announcement
at the end of a hearing at the prison in Terre
Haute (Indiana), where the Puerto Rican political
prisoner, Oscar Lopez, is serving a sentence of 70 years in prison.
It was very inappropriate and even offensive and
rejects the will of the people of Puerto Rico,
who have supported the release of Oscar,
according to Jan Susler, Oscar López Rivera's lawyer, on leaving the meeting.
Contrary to what had been expected, the hearing
officer went in person to the prison and raised
the issue of the families of the victims of the
attack on Frances Tavern in New York, which is
attributed to the Armed Forces of National Liberation (FALN).
López Rivera, who has served 29 years and nine
months in prison, was convicted of seditious
conspiracy for his links to the FALN. He was
never connected to what happened in the Fraunces
Tavern, Susler said, indicating that the hearing
officer "behaved like an FBI agent. "
