Un abogado independentista fue citado a un gran 
jurado federal en Nueva York para ser interrogado 
como parte de la investigación de las autoridades 
federales al Ejército Popular Boricua ­Los 
Macheteros­, informó hoy, jueves, Michael 
González Cruz, del movimiento Mesa de Solidaridad.

El portavoz dijo a la AP que tres agentes del 
Negociado de Investigaciones Criminales (FBI, en 
inglés) entregaron recientemente una citación al 
abogado puertorriqueño Elliot Monteverde Torres 
en su residencia en Dallas, Texas, para que acuda 
el 23 de mayo ante un gran jurado en Nueva York.

"Supuestamente, (la citación) está relacionada 
con la investigación del Ejército Popular Boricua 
­Los Macheteros­ que hacía (la oficina del FBI 
en) San Juan", dijo González Cruz en entrevista con la AP.

No fue posible conseguir de inmediato una 
reacción del FBI. El oficial de prensa del FBI en 
Puerto Rico, Harry Rodríguez, refirió las 
preguntas a la oficina de Nueva York, pero las llamadas no fueron respondidas.

González Cruz señaló que Monteverde Torres se 
identifica como independentista, fue líder 
estudiantil en Rutgers University en Nueva Jersey 
y fue portavoz de la coalición Vieques Alliance, 
una organización independentista que reúne grupos 
de derechos humanos, pacifistas e 
independentistas de puertorriqueños y otras nacionalidades.

González Cruz dijo que la organización Mesa de 
Solidaridad, que se creó cuando fueron citados 
otros tres puertorriqueños a un gran jurado en 
Nueva York a principios de año, protestará 
también por la citación de Monteverde Torres, 
aunque no ofreció fechas para esa actividad.

Hoy, jueves, se llevaría a cabo una actividad 
denominada "Foro contra la Represión" en el 
edificio de la Unión de Trabajadores de la 
Industria Eléctrica y Riego (UTIER) en Santurce.

Luego del allanamiento a la residencia del 
autoproclamado líder de Los Macheteros, Filiberto 
Ojeda Ríos, el 23 de septiembre de 2005, las 
autoridades federales han allanado posteriormente 
las residencias de otros independentistas. Un 
agente del FBI mató a Ojeda Ríos durante el operativo de 2005.

En tanto, señaló que aún está pendiente otra 
citación de los jóvenes independentistas Tania 
Frontera y Christopher Torres, cuya comparecencia 
en enero fue aplazada pero aún no tiene fecha.
Líderes del movimiento independentista, entre 
ellos un congresista de origen puertorriqueño, 
José Serrano, han expresado temor de que las 
citaciones al gran jurado sean una repetición de 
la represión que vivieron los separatistas durante el siglo 20.

Durante varias décadas, informantes de las 
autoridades vigilaban minuciosamente cada 
actividad de los independentistas, las apuntaban 
en expedientes consultados por la Policía de 
Puerto Rico y el FBI, y hablaban con vecinos y 
patronos de los independentistas y les decían que 
esas personas que vivían en su comunidad eran terroristas.

La práctica de las llamadas carpetas fue 
declarada ilegal por el Tribunal Supremo de 
Puerto Rico y la División de Inteligencia de la 
Policía, que era utilizada para esos propósitos, 
fue desmantelada. Los independentistas 
carpeteados demandaron al gobierno y obtuvieron indemnización.

Muchos narraron historias en el tribunal sobre 
cómo sus carreras y sus vidas en comunidad fueron 
arruinadas por informantes de la Policía que 
regaban rumores falsos de que ellos eran personas malas y peligrosas.

An independentista attorney was subpoenaed to a 
federal grand jury in New York to be interrogated 
as part of the federal authorities’ investigation 
into the Popular Boricua Army­The 
Macheteros­reported today, Thursday, Michael 
González Cruz, of the movement Solidarity Table.

The spokesperson told the AP that three agents of 
the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) 
recently served a subpoena on the Puerto Rican 
attorney Elliot Monteverde Torres at his home in 
Dallas, Texas, for his appearance on May 23 at a grand jury in New York.

“Supposedly, (the subpoena) is related to the 
investigation of the Popular Boricua Army­The 
Macheteros­which (the FBI office) in San Juan is 
doing,” said González Cruz in an interview with the AP.

It was not possible to immediately get a reaction 
from the FBI. The FBI press official in Puerto 
Rico, Harry Rodríguez, referred questions to the 
office in New York, but calls were not returned.

González Cruz indicated that Monteverde Torres 
identifies himself as an independentista, was a 
student leader at Rutgers University in New 
Jersey, and was spokesperson for the coalition 
Vieques Alliance, an independentista organization 
comprised of human rights groups, pacifists, and 
Puerto Rican independentistas as well as those of other nationalities.

González Cruz said that the organization 
Solidarity Table, which was created when three 
other Puerto Ricans were subpoenaed to a grand 
jury in New York early this year, will also 
protest Monteverde Torres’ subpoena, although he 
did not specify any date for this activity.

Today, Thursday, there was an activity called 
“Forum Against Repression” in the building of the 
Electrical Industry Workers Union (UTIER) in Santurce.

After the search of the home of the 
self-proclaimed leader of The Macheteros, 
Filiberto Ojeda Ríos on September 23, 2005, 
federal authorities have subsequently searched 
the homes of other independentistas. An FBI agent 
killed Ojeda Ríos during the 2005 operation.

Meanwhile, he stated that the subpoenas of the 
young independentistas Tania Frontera and 
Christopher Torres, whose appearances in January 
were continued, are still pending, although there is as yet no date set.

Leaders of the independence movement, including a 
congressional representative of Puerto Rican 
origin, José Serrano, have expressed fear that 
the grand jury subpoenas are a repetition of the 
repression that the separatists lived during the 20th century.

For several decades, informants meticulously 
surveilled every independentista activity, noted 
them in files consulted by the Puerto Rican 
Police and the FBI, and spoke with 
independentistas’  neighbors and bosses and told 
them that these people who lived in their community were terrorists.

The practice of the so-called subversive files 
was declared illegal by the Supreme Court of 
Puerto Rico. The Intelligence Division of the 
Police, which was used for this purpose, was 
dismantled. The independentistas who were the 
subject of the subversive files sued the government and were remunerated.

Many told their stories in court about how their 
careers and their lives in the community were 
ruined by Police informants who spread false 
rumors that they were bad and dangerous people.
