Manhattan En apoyo de los independentistas 
boricuas que están citados a declarar el viernes 
en la corte federal de Brooklyn, activistas, 
abogados y grupos afroamericanos celebraron ayer 
una rueda de prensa en el Ayuntamiento.

Entre ellos estuvo Tania Frontera, una de las 
cinco personas citadas por diversas cortes en 
esta investigación del FBI, y que ha decidido 
ejercer su derecho a permanecer callada. Sin 
embargo, al hacerlo existe la posibilidad de que 
la jueza Carol B. Amon, la declare en rebeldía y 
la envíe a la cárcel varios años, como ya ha sucedido en el pasado.

Frontera, que vive en Nueva York y trabaja como 
diseñadora gráfica, sigue la tradición 
independentista de sus padres y abuelos. “Me 
siento nerviosa porque no me gusta estar frente a 
las cámaras. Estoy loca porque se termine todo”, dijo ayer.

Frontera estaba acompañada de su madre, Tania 
Bosch, quien vino de Puerto Rico “en 
representación de todos los amigos de Tania, la 
comunidad y sus familiares. Estoy aquí” aseguró 
“para apoyar a mi hija en cualquiera que sea su 
decisión y en todo lo que venga”.

Activistas y políticos denunciaron ayer que el 
gobierno y el FBI usan a la corte federal como 
instrumento político para perseguir a los 
independentistas y obtener información sobre el 
movimiento. Para ellos se está privando a las 
personas citadas a declarar, de su derecho a 
permanecer callados, amenazándoles con cárcel si no colaboran.

Ana López, portavoz de Hostos Grand Jury 
Resistance Campaig, aseguró: “Tenemos una 
historia en Puerto Rico con el FBI y lo que 
sucede es una expedición de pesca, como dice el 
congresista José Serrano, para intentar intimidar 
a los activistas y obtener información”.

La concejal Melissa Mark-Viverito mencionó como 
antecedentes la conocida como “Ley de las 
Carpetas”, una campaña de vigilancia ilegal de 
los independentistas que el FBI inició en 1930. 
Asimismo recordó la “Ley de la mordaza” de los 
años 1950 y por la que encarcelaban a cualquiera 
que se identificara o simpatizara con el movimiento independentista.

En la rueda de prensa estuvieron independentistas 
históricos como Julio Rosado, quien pasó tres 
años en cárceles federales por no colaborar en 
investigaciones contra los independentistas.

“Yo leí que en 1935 esto mismo había sucedido y 
me di cuenta de que esto iba más allá de mí, 
porque era una pesquisa política. Sobre esa base 
fue que nos negamos a colaborar porque querían 
convertirnos en informantes y dar elementos al 
fiscal para que procediera contra otros”, afirmó.

Manhattan In support of the Puerto Rican 
independentistas who are subpoenaed to testify on 
Friday in federal court in Brooklyn, activists, 
attorneys and African American groups yesterday 
held a press conference at City Hall.

Among them was Tania Frontera, one of the five 
people subpoenaed by various courts in the FBI’s 
investigation, and who has decided to exercise 
her right to remain silent. However, in doing so, 
there is a possibility that judge Carol B. Amon 
could find her in contempt and sends her to jail 
for several years, as has happened in the past.

Frontera, who lives in New York and works as a 
graphic designer, follows the independentista 
tradition of her parents and grandparents. “I 
feel nervous because I don’t like to be in front 
of the camera. I am crazy for this to be done with,” she said yesterday.

Frontera was accompanied by her mother, Tania 
Bosch, who came from Puerto Rico “in 
representation of all of Tania’s friends, family 
and community. I am here,” she assured, “to 
support my daughter in whatever decision she 
makes and in everything that results.”

Activists and politicians denounced yesterday 
that the government and the FBI are using the 
federal court as a political instrument to 
persecute independentistas and obtain information 
about the movement. For them, people subpoenaed 
to testify are losing their right to remain 
silent, threatened with jail if they do not collaborate.

Ana López, spokesperson for Hostos Grand Jury 
Resistance Campaign, stated: “We have a history 
in Puerto Rico with the FBI, and what happens is 
a fishing expedition, as congressional 
representative José Serrano has said, to attempt 
to intimidate activists and obtain information.

City council member Melissa Mark-Viverito 
mentioned as previous cases the one known as the 
“Law of the Subversive Files,” a campaign of 
illegal surveillance of independentistas that the 
FBI initiated in 1930. In the same vein, she 
recalled the “Muzzle Law” of the 1950's, under 
which anyone who identified or sympathized with 
the independence movement was sent to prison.

Attending the press conference were historic 
independentistas including Julio Rosado, who 
spent three years in federal prison for refusing 
to collaborate with investigations against independentistas.
“I read that in 1935 the same thing had happened, 
and I realized that this went way beyond me, 
because it was a political investigation. That 
was the basis on which we refused to collaborate, 
because they wanted to convert us into 
informants, to provide evidence to the 
prosecution so that they could prosecute other people,” he affirmed.
