Support Imam Jamil, the former H. Rap Brown, at the stateside Guantanamo
by the International Committee to Support Imam Jamil Al-Amin
Imam Jamil, shown here with his son, must be free to come home to his
family and his people.Imam Jamil Al-Amin, the former H. Rap Brown, is
approaching his eighth year of political internment. A conspicuous
stop for driving while Black during the spring of '99, a court
closing due to a snowstorm in January 2000 and a bench warrant for
non-appearance at that court date, a shooting incident and a rush to
judgment accusation on March 16, 2000, an unjust arrest, a forced
conviction and the inhumane sentence of life without parole plus 35
years in March 2002.
After being forced to serve five and a half years in administrative
segregation - 23-hour-per-day lockdown, no human contact etc. - at
the state prison at Reidsville, Georgia's notorious K-Block, Imam
Jamil Al-Amin in August 2007 was transferred to the maximum security
federal prison at Florence, Colorado, known as the Supermax. His
housing conditions remain 23-hour lockdown, no human contact,
silence, five social visits per month, two phone calls per month and
denial of all media requests for interviews.
Although he has no contact with them, he is joined by many other
political prisoners who are well known Muslim leaders, as well as
leaders in the struggle for self-determination: Dr. Mutulu Shakur,
Imam Malik Khaba (Jeff Fort), Brother Sekou Odinga, Larry Hoover,
leader of Growth and Development (formerly the Gangster Disciples)
and Dr. Malakai Z. York, to name just a few. Due to all these leaders
representing legitimate "people's struggles," Florence Supermax is
being referred to as the stateside Guantanamo.
Imam Jamil Al-Amin's transfer into federal custody and to the
Supermax comes on the heels of some hard won victories: 1) The 11th
Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in Imam Jamil's favor against the
prison at Reidsville in regard to a suit filed to disallow them from
continuing to open his legal mail, 2) The groundswell of support for
the Imam developing into phone call-ins and postal and e-mail
write-ins, bringing the offices at Reidsville Prison and the
Department of Corrections to a virtual standstill, along with the
periodic protest demonstrations that would cause Reidsville, the town
and the prison to shut down..
Support must continue. Write to: Imam Jamil Al-Amin, # 99974-555, USP
Florence Admax, P.O. Box 8500, Florence, CO 81226.
Depositions relating to his Habeas Corpus hearing are being prepared.
Being housed at Florence Supermax makes it additionally difficult for
lawyers, family and the Imam to jointly work on his appeal. Financial
contributions should be made to the Justice Fund, P.O. Box 98963,
Atlanta GA 30377.
