Aplazan citacion de independentistas

NUEVA YORK- Las autoridades federales han 
aplazado "indefinidamente" la citacion ante un 
Gran Jurado del condado de Brooklyn de tres 
jovenes independentistas boricuas de Nueva York.
Las citaciones, que estaban previstas para 
manana, no han sido eliminadas, dijo Vicente 
'Panama Alba, activista de la comunidad puertorriquena en Nueva York.

"Este desarrollo no puede ser interpretado como 
una senal de que ha terminado la campana de 
represion del Gobierno en contra del pueblo de 
Puerto Rico o de nuestro derecho a la libre 
determinacion e independencia", indica Alba.

Esta es la segunda vez que las autoridades 
federales aplazan las citaciones hechas a la 
artista grafica Tania Frontera, el trabajador 
social Christian Torres y el cineasta Julio 
Pabon. La diferencia es que al notificarles de la 
posposicion esta vez no les dieron una nueva fecha, senala Alba.

Los tres jovenes independentistas han indicado 
que desconocen las razones por las cuales fueron 
citados. Pero, se cree que es parte de un 
esfuerzo del FBI de entrevistar a sectores 
independentistas en busca de informacion 
relacionada al grupo clandestino Los Macheteros.

Activistas boricuas de Nueva York, el Partido 
Independentista Puertorriqueno (PIP), el 
Movimiento Independentista Nacional Hostosiano 
(MINH) y el congresista democrata Jose Serrano, 
entre otros, han calificado la citacion a esos 
tres jovenes -reconocidos en su comunidad-, como 
una "expedicion de pesca" del FBI.

Según fuentes cercanas a las autoridades 
federales, el director del FBI, Luis Fraticelli, 
puede terminar este semestre su período como 
jefe de la Policía federal en Puerto Rico y 
quiere acelerar las investigaciones sobre el grupo clandestino.

La oficina del FBI en Puerto Rico ha dejado 
entrever que dio nueva vida a las investigaciones 
sobre Los Macheteros despues que dio muerte el 23 
de septiembre de 2005, al leder de la 
organizacion, Filiberto Ojeda Rios, en momentos 
en que ejecutaban una orden de arresto.

A Frontera y a Torres se les conoce por su 
activismo en contra de las maniobras militares 
estadounidenses en Vieques, un movimiento que genera consenso en Puerto Rico.

NEW YORK– Federal authorities have postponed 
"indefinitely" the Broooklyn Grand Jury subpoenas 
of three young Puerto Rican independentists from New York.

The subpoenas, which were set for tomorrow, have 
not been quashed, said Vicente "Panama" Alba, an 
activist in the Puerto Rican community in New York.

"This development cannot be interpreted as a sign 
that the government has ended its campaign of 
repression against the people of Puerto Rico or 
our right to self determination and independence," said Alba.

This is the second time that federal authorities 
postponed the subpoenas on graphic artist Tania 
Frontera, social worker Christian [sic] Torres 
and filmmaker Julio Pabon. The difference is that 
this time when they were notified of the 
postponement, they were not given a new date, said Alba.

The three young independentists have indicated 
they do not know the reasons for which they were 
subpoenaed. However, it is thought to be part of 
an FBI effort to interview independentist sectors 
in search of information related to the clandestine group The Macheteros.

Puerto Rican activists in New York, the Puerto 
Rican Independence Party (PIP), the National 
Hostos Independence Movement (MINH) and the 
Democratic congressman Jose Serrano, among 
others, have called the subpoena of the three 
young people, well known in their community, as an FBI "fishing expedition."

According to sources close to the federal 
authorities, FBI director Luis Fraticelli may end 
his term as head of the federal police in Puerto 
Rico and wants to accelerate the investigations into the clandestine group.

The FBI office in Puerto Rico has hinted that 
their investigations into The Macheteros got new 
life after the September 23, 2005 death of the 
organization's leader, Filiberto Ojeda Rios, 
during the execution of an arrest warrant.

Frontera and Torres are known for their activism 
against U.S. military maneuvers in Vieques, a 
movement that generated consensus in Puerto Rico.
