Independentistas denuncian alza en persecusión federal

Independentistas denunciaron hoy un supuesto 
aumento en la persecución de las autoridades 
federales contra las personas que respaldan ese ideal.

Liliana Laboy, quien fue objeto de un 
allanamiento a su casa en febrero de 2006, 
aseguró que los agentes federales han retomado 
las prácticas intimidatorias de las décadas de 
1960 y 1970, cuando visitaban las comunidades en 
las que residían los independentistas y pedían 
colaboración de los vecinos para sus investigaciones.

"A partir del 23 de septiembre de 2005 (cuando un 
agente federal mató de un disparo a Filiberto 
Ojeda Ríos durante un operativo) la persecusión 
continuó... Hay todo tipo de hostigamiento, hay 
visitas a los vecinos, y se les dice que (los 
independentistas) son terroristas", denunció 
Laboy, portavoz de la Mesa de la Solidaridad contra la Represión.

De inmediato, no fue posible obtener una reacción 
del FBI, que no respondió a dos llamadas de Prensa Asociada.

La activista independentista indicó que, tan 
cercano como el lunes, otro independentista 
residente en Nueva York, identificado como 
Carmelo Ruiz Villanueva, recibió una citación 
para comparecer el 26 de septiembre ante un gran jurado en esa ciudad.

En el pasado, las autoridades federales habían 
citado a Tania Frontera, Christopher Torres y 
Elliot Monteverde ­todos vecinos de Nueva York­ 
para acudir ante el gran jurado como parte de una 
investigación del FBI al Ejército Popular 
Boricua-Los Macheteros. Un cuarto 
independentista, residente en la isla y quien no 
fue identificado, también fue citado.

Héctor Pesquera, copresidente del Movimiento 
Independentista Nacional Hostosiano, cuestionó 
las intenciones de las autoridades federales para citarlos ante un gran jurado.

"El FBI conoce de sobra que la posición histórica 
del independentismo ha sido la no cooperación... 
utilizan la citación para que, a sabiendas de que 
no va a haber cooperación, tener la excusa para 
encarcelarlos", manifestó Pesquera.

La no comparecencia ante un gran jurado puede 
resultar en por lo menos 18 meses de prisión por desacato.

Tras la muerte a manos de un agente federal Ojeda 
Ríos, líder Los Macheteros, en septiembre de 
2005, el sector independentista ha denunciado el 
incremento de las acciones en su contra.
Cinco meses después de la muerte de Ojeda Ríos, 
en febrero de 2006, agentes del FBI allanaron 
seis inmuebles de independentistas en distintos puntos de la isla.

En los pasados meses, varios activistas por la 
independencia de Puerto Rico ­un territorio 
estadounidense desde 1898­ han sido objeto de 
visitas a sus casas y de intervenciones en la 
calle por parte de agentes federales.

Sobre la posición de algunos de que las 
autoridades federales no sólo intervienen con los 
independentistas y que muestra de ello son las 24 
acusaciones contra el gobernador Aníbal Acevedo 
Vilá y los allanamientos contra el senador 
novoprogresista Jorge de Castro Font, el ex preso 
político Rafael Candel Miranda afirmó: "a 
aquellos los acusan de fraude, robo; a los 
independentistas nos acusan de ser independentistas".

"El FBI considera a los Macheteros como una 
organización terrorista. Por su parte, el 
movimiento independentista ha acusado a Estados 
Unidos de persecución política durante décadas".

Independentistas today denounced a supposed 
increase in federal authorities’ persecution of people who support this ideal.

Liliana Laboy, whose house was searched in 
February of 2006, assured that federal agents 
have resumed the intimidatory practices of the 
1960's and 1970's, when they visited communities 
where independentistas lived and when they sought 
neighbors’ collaboration in their investigations.

“Since September 23, 2005 (when a federal agent 
shot Filiberto Ojeda Ríos to death during an 
operation), the persecution has continued... 
There is all sorts of harassment, visits to 
neighbors, and they tell them that 
independentistas are terrorists,” denounced 
Laboy, spokesperson for the Table of Solidarity Against Repression.

It was not possible to obtain an immediate 
reaction from the FBI, which did not respond to 
two calls from the Associated Press.

The independentista activist indicated that as 
recently as Monday, another independentista 
living in New York, identified as Carmelo Ruiz 
Villanueva, received a subpoena to appear before 
a grand jury in that city on September 26.

In the past, federal authorities had subpoenaed 
Tania Frontera, Christopher Torres [sic] and 
Elliot Monteverde ­all residents of New York 
[sic]­ to appear before the grand jury as part of 
an FBI investigation of the Boricua Popular 
Army–The Macheteros. A fourth independentista, 
who lives on the island and who was not identified, has also been subpoenaed.

Héctor Pesquera, co-chair of the National Hostos 
Independentista Movement, questioned the 
intentions of federal authorities in subpoenaing them to a grand jury.

“The FBI knows full well that the historical 
position of the independence movement has been 
non collaboration... they use the subpoena, 
knowing that people will not cooperate, to have 
an excuse to imprison them,” Pesquera stated.

Refusal to appear before a grand jury can result 
in at least 18 months of prison for contempt.

Since the death of Ojeda Ríos, Macheteros leader, 
in September of 2005 at the hands of a federal 
agent, the independentista sector has denounced 
the increase in actions against it.

Five months after the death of Ojeda Ríos, in 
February of 2006, FBI agents searched six 
properties of independentistas in different parts of the island.

In the past months, various activists for the 
independence of Puerto Rico­a U.S. territory 
since 1898­ have been the subject of visits to 
their homes and interventions in the street by federal agents.

As for the position of some people that the 
federal authorities do not exclusively 
intervene  independentistas, for example the 24 
accusations against Aníbal Acevedo Vilá and the 
searches of statehood senator Jorge de Castro 
Font, former political prisoner Rafael Cancel 
Miranda affirmed: “they accuse the others of 
fraud, robbery; they accuse independentistas of being independentistas.”

“The FBI considers The Macheteros to be a 
terrorist organization. But the independence 
movement has for decades accused the United States of political persecution.”
