DAIR - PLO
Monday, 16 April 2007

The thirty-third anniversary comes while the rest of the Palestinians
outside prisons are besieged by the Apartheid Segregation Wall,
Jewish settlements, and Israeli checkpoints;

11,000 Palestinian prisoners are detained in the Israeli Jails, many
of whom are sentenced to more than 30 years and are being subjected
to harsh and repressive conditions within central prisons, detention
centers and military camps.

Since 1967, about 25 percent of the Palestinians living in the
occupied Palestinian territories have been arrested at one time or
another. Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners' houses as well as their
relatives' have been demolished as a punishment against them.
Thousands of Palestinian families have been banned from visiting
their loved ones in the Israeli jails. Tens of prisoners were also
deported from the WB toGaza Strip or to outside the Palestinian territories.

Among the prisoners that are still arrested in the Israeli Jails, 398
Palestinian children and 110 Palestinian woman. 850 of the detainees
are kept in administrative detentions without trials, 64 of the lot
are sentenced to more 20 years while 15 prisoners are held in
isolation for more than 5 years, and 187 Palestinians prisoners have
died in Israeli jails; The forty one members of the PLC that were
kidnapped and jailed by the Israeli occupation are still imprisoned
which is keeping the Palestinian Legislative Council almost paralyzed.

Some 1,000 Palestinian inmates are reported to be suffering from
serious diseases and sickness, 150 of whom suffer from chronic
diseases. Only 30 of the sick prisoners made it to a hospital for
treatment. News coming from inside the jails confirm that some 1000
Palestinian have been used as lab rats by Israeli physicians and
medical authorities that conducted medical experiments on some of them.

DAIR calls on the UN, International Red Crescent, and all
humanitarian organizations to work towards ensuring the protection of
Palestinian prisoners, and to bring to an end the policy of political
detention, and the terror it entails. Israeli authorities must abide
by the Fourth Geneva Convention, international standards and laws
regarding the Palestinian prisoners, and to respect treaties and
agreements to which it is a signatory. The systematic use of
administrative detention against Palestinian detainees as a form of
collective punishment is illegal under the international law and must
come to an end.

Any proposed political solution that doesn't include the Palestinian
prisoners won't bring real results; the case of the Palestinian
Prisoners will always be among the Palestinian People prominent issues.
