A federal jury hearing the case against activist lawyer Lynne Stewart and
two co-defendants in Manhattan deliberated for nearly three hours Wednesday
after receiving instructions on the law.
The panel, which is anonymous and partially sequestered, concluded
deliberations at 4 p.m. Deliberations are to continue Thursday.
Stewart, 65, a veteran criminal defense lawyer who represented Sheik Omar
Abdel-Rahman in 1995, has been on trial for the last seven months on
charges that include conspiracy, providing material support to a terrorist
organization, as well as two counts of making false statements to the
government.
Prosecutors contend that Stewart, Ahmed Sattar, a U.S. postal worker who
worked as a paralegal on the sheik's case, and Mohamed Yousry, who worked
as the sheik's translator, conspired to pass messages from the imprisoned
Abdel-Rahman to his militant followers in the Islamic Group.
The sheik was serving life for his conviction in a foiled plot to bomb New
York landmarks and to kill Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Stewart
continued to represent him after his imprisonment.
The defendants are accused of passing a message in 2000 that said
Abdel-Rahman, the Islamic Group's spiritual leader, had withdrawn his
support for a cease-fire after United States officials restricted him from
communicating with his followers. Stewart is also charged with defrauding
the government by promising to abide by the restrictions.
