Our November 2021 move from
San Francisco to Berkeley
was an important step
towards ensuring that we can
sustainably maintain and
expand the work of the
Freedom Archives for years
to come. Settling into our
building was an undertaking
in itself! We needed to set
up and wire our audio and
video equipment, rehouse
many of our archival
collections to ensure their
long-term preservation and
arrange our physical space
to maximize capacity to

December, we spent over a
week in Puerto Rico to
conduct interviews with
former political prisoners
involved in the Puerto Rico
independence movement for a
new documentary film
project. Puerto Rico’s
resistance to colonialism
since 1898 is supported by
International Law. The
United Nations General
Assembly declared
colonialism an international
crime in 1970. That
resolution reaffirmed the
right of colonized people to
utilize all forms of
struggle necessary to win
independence and
self-determination. Over the
course of their
anti-colonial resistance,
the people of Puerto Rico
have fought to achieve
independence with mass
demonstrations and strikes
to militant resistance and
clandestine actions.
Throughout, support for
their political prisoners
has continued to be central
to their movement for
independence. We are hoping
that the film’s final
product will allow the
stories of many of the
former Puerto Rican
political prisoners, their
motives, their imprisonment,
and eventual successful
release to finally be told.
Our initial plan was to
begin this documentary
project in March of 2020 so
as you can imagine, we are
very excited to finally get
this project under way. </p>

In addition to public
presentations, film festivals,
classroom visits, and research
appointments, as always, we
continue to add dynamic
archival materials to our
holdings. We’ve substantially
increased our holdings about
the anti-Apartheid campaign to
oppose the South African rugby
team (the Springboks) visit to
the US, Black Power political
organizations, periodicals
like Leviathan – a publication
covering university politics,
working class issues, and the
development of the progressive
movements of the 60s, and the
Cuban cultural periodical Casa
de las Americas. </p>
<p style="margin:0">We also
added several newly-received
and now digitized materials to
our Pontiac Brothers
collection and recently
cataloged a collection
entitled “Revolutionary
Struggles in Iran.” The
finding aid for the Iran
collection is available on our
search site and it focuses on
artistic and intellectual
freedom, political repression,
and armed struggle in the Left
and progressive movements in
Iran.</p>

we’ve been taking some
significant steps toward
building and strengthening our
archival processes and
organization. Quietly but
diligently, we’ve been working
with the designer of our
online database to increase
its public searchability,
improve our internal
organization schema and best
support our continued intake
and cataloging of new archival
materials. The database has
been vital to our work and we
are excited that these
improvements will allow us to
remain accessible and
organized for years to come.
Additionally, we’ve been
consulting with audio
technicians and digital
archivists to streamline our
audio digitization workflow.
Not only will this project
allow us to continue to evolve
with changing industry
standards on audio
preservation but also better
position us to properly manage
future digital donations. </p>
