For almost a quarter of a century, the U.S.
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
spied on famed Colombian writer and Nobel
Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the Washington Post has
revealed.

The U.S. paper obtained recently declassified documents
exposing how the police agency began to monitor the
author and journalist after he came to New York for a
short visit in 1961, and did not cease until 1985, three
years after he won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

It is unclear from the 137 released pages of the
document why the FBI pursued Garcia Marquez, the Post
reports, although it may be connected to his help in the
foundation of Prensa Latina, the press agency for Cuba.

Marquez also supported a communist-backed takeover in
Venezuela in 1958.

“In the event he enters the U.S. for any purpose, the
Bureau should be promptly advised,” reads one memo in
the document written by FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, in
February 1961.

Gabo’s son, Rodrigo, told Washington Post he was not
surprised the FBI monitored his father.

“Considering the fact that this Colombian guy was in
New York opening a Cuban press agency, it would be
unusual if he was not spied upon,” he said, adding that
his father was aware of being followed by men who
“appeared to communicate by whistling.”

Garcia Marquez remained close friends with Fidel and
was hyper-critical of U.S. presence in Latin America
until <a
