October 13, 2004 (AHP)-</b> The parish priest of
Sainte-Claire de Petite-Place Cazeau, Father Gérard Jean-Juste was
arrested Wednesday at his presbytery. <br><br>
According to sources close to the police, Father Jean-Juste is being
accused of having financed the acts of violence that have been committed
in recent days in Port-au-Prince. <br><br>
Uniformed Haitian national police and men in hoods took control of the
Petite Place Cazeau to carry out the arrest. <br><br>
According to area residents, the Catholic priest was arrested as he was
dispensing food to children. Two of the children were reportedly injured
as the arrest was being made. <br><br>
Other residents said that Father Jean-Juste was manhandled as he was
placed inside the vehicle that drove him to the detention facility.
<br><br>
The arrest caused a great stir throughout the community as residents
expressed outrage. <br><br>
Several senior party officials and members of Parliament from Fanmi
Lavalas including Senator Yvon Feuillé and former Deputy Rudy Hériveaux
have been arrested under accusations similar to those made against Father
Jean-Juste. <br><br>
Former Prime Minister Yvon Neptune, former Interior Minister Jocelerme
Privert, the political activist Annette Auguste as well as a number of
other high-level officials and members of Fanmi Lavalas have been kept in
prison for several months on grounds that remain unclear.
