Iranian missile strikes damaged multiple US military aircraft in Jordan,
while Tehran announced another operation against an American unmanned
vessel at Hormuz.
Key Developments
- US sources acknowledged that an A-10 lost a wing and around eight
F-15s were damaged in Iran’s missile attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in
Jordan.
- More than 30 Patriot interceptors were reportedly fired during the
attack, which Iran said targeted facilities housing and servicing US combat
aircraft.
- Iran separately announced the destruction of a US Saildrone Explorer
at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, where maritime traffic has fallen
dramatically.
Iran’s expanding military retaliation against US forces has inflicted
confirmed damage on American combat aircraft in Jordan, as Tehran continues
operations against US assets around the Strait of Hormuz and maintains
pressure on one of the world’s most important maritime corridors.
Multiple American military aircraft were damaged when Iranian missiles
struck Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, also known as Al-Azraq, overnight Tuesday
into Wednesday, people with direct knowledge of the damage told CBS News.
One US A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft was struck so severely that it
lost a wing.
Around eight F-15 fighter jets sustained lighter damage, although they were
subsequently returned to service, according to the US sources.
The acknowledgement is significant because it provides US-sourced
confirmation that Iran’s latest missile operation penetrated defenses
around a major base used by American forces and physically damaged US
military aircraft.
American forces fired more than 30 Patriot missiles attempting to defend
against the Iranian barrage, according to the report.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had announced the operation
hours earlier, saying its Aerospace Force had struck Al-Azraq in
retaliation for US attacks against Iranian commercial and oil vessels.
Iran said its missiles were aimed specifically at maintenance and repair
hangars, aircraft-preparation facilities and shelters used by US F-35, F-16
and F-15 warplanes.
The IRGC said the operation had inflicted heavy damage.
More than 30 Patriots Fired
The scale of the defensive response at Al-Azraq is also notable.
US forces launched more than 30 Patriot interceptors during the Iranian
attack, according to people familiar with the operation.
That expenditure comes as US officials have already expressed concern over
declining stocks of Patriot missiles and other precision munitions after
months of warfare.
The Iranian operation followed a sharp escalation at sea.
The United States said Tuesday that it had attacked five Iranian tankers
after Iran targeted a US Navy warship.
Iran responded by announcing attacks against eight tankers, two US warships
and the American-used base in Jordan.
The IRGC framed the Al-Azraq operation as a direct response to those
attacks on Iranian vessels.
“Faced with the heroic and powerful naval forces of the IRGC in the Strait
of Hormuz, the enemy, from a position of incapacity, helplessness, and
weakness, resorted to desperate actions and immediately received a decisive
response,” the IRGC said.
The latest exchange therefore links two increasingly interconnected fronts:
US military bases across the region and the maritime confrontation
surrounding Hormuz.
US Vessel Targeted
Iran announced another operation against a US asset on Thursday, this time
directly at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC Navy said it had destroyed an American Saildrone Explorer unmanned
surface vessel while it was conducting a mission in the area.
According to the Iranian statement, the vessel was operating at the
entrance to the strait when it was targeted.
The IRGC Navy reiterated that Iran considers Hormuz closed and under its
control and warned that any hostile presence in the area would be targeted.
According to Al Mayadeen, shipping through Hormuz has fallen to
approximately one-tenth of the level recorded before the war.
The Strait of Hormuz previously handled roughly one-fifth of daily global
oil flows.
Iran’s Hormuz Leverage
Iran’s ability to disrupt Hormuz has emerged as one of its most
consequential sources of leverage in the war.
The United States and Israel launched the current war against Iran on
February 28. A ceasefire was reached on April 8, but fighting resumed after
subsequent US military action against Iran.
In July, the US carried out renewed airstrikes against Iran and imposed a
naval blockade despite the June 17 Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding
intended to end the fighting.
Iran subsequently launched attacks on American military targets across West
Asia and declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to maritime traffic.
The consequences are increasingly visible beyond the battlefield.
Global oil prices have again climbed above $100 per barrel as fighting
around Iran and Hormuz intensifies.
US gasoline prices rose 7.3 cents in a single day on Wednesday, reaching a
national average of $4.22 per gallon, while average diesel prices reached a
record $5.94 per gallon.
The Trump administration had previously predicted that the war would last
four to six weeks and that fuel prices would subsequently fall.
Those predictions have not materialized. Roughly six months into the war,
Washington has been unable to restore normal traffic through Hormuz, while
shipping companies remain reluctant to send tankers through a waterway
where Iran continues demonstrating an ability to target vessels.
Trump:‘Can’t Hold Out’
Against that backdrop, US President Donald Trump insisted Wednesday that
Iran was approaching collapse and predicted that Tehran would abandon the
war after the US midterm elections.
“They can’t hold out any longer,” Trump told reporters.
He accused Iran of prolonging the fighting to influence the November
elections, saying Tehran wanted Americans to elect a “nice, weak group of
people” who would allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon.
Trump also acknowledged that US gasoline prices were unlikely to fall until
after the midterms.
Asked about negotiations, he said Washington was not currently seeking
talks with Tehran.
“Originally I wanted to make a deal,” Trump said. “We’re so far down the
line, they have very little country left right now, so we’re not looking
for it.”
He added that negotiations remained possible but were “not something we’re
looking at.”
His assessment of an Iran nearing exhaustion comes as American forces are
confronting continued Iranian attacks on US bases, warships and unmanned
systems, while the economic effects of the struggle over Hormuz continue to
deepen.
IRGC: We Are Ready
Iranian officials, meanwhile, have signaled no intention of ending their
military response while US attacks continue.
The IRGC has said the confrontation will continue until American attacks
cease, while Iran’s Army Ground Force said Thursday that its forces remain
deployed and prepared for further combat.
Brigadier General Ali Jahanshahi said Iranian units had moved large
quantities of troops, equipment and ammunition under enemy surveillance and
fire during the recent fighting.
“This massive relocation of troops, equipment, and ammunition took place
while the enemy was monitoring our movements using drones, aircraft, spy
satellites, and other surveillance tools,” he said.
Despite what he described as “harsh and grueling conditions,” Jahanshahi
said Iranian forces had continued their missions and defended the country’s
borders.
