Colombian President Petro Urges Us to Change Its Policy Towards Cuba

The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has called on the United States
(U.S.) government, presided over by Donald Trump, to “change its policy”
towards Cuba, given the intensification of the economic and oil blockade
imposed by Washington on the island.

Through his social media, the Colombian president proposed promoting a
solar energy program throughout Havana, due to the frequent blackouts that
occur on the island due to the severe fuel shortage they have been
experiencing since December.
“In Latin America, we can support by manufacturing solar panels. Colombia
provides its silica sands and copper; we already produce panels for export
if necessary,” Petro indicated, stressing that dialogue between Washington
and Havana must be restarted under a logic of cooperation.
He recalled that the Caribbean island lent its territory to help with the
peace process in Colombia, and did so at the request of the Colombian
government during the term of Juan Manuel Santos (2010-2018), a fact that,
in his opinion, his predecessor Iván Duque “ignored.”
“I thank Cuba for having collaborated with Norway for the peace of
Colombia. Cuba is a jewel in the Caribbean and its people are cultured and
could greatly help humanity with their knowledge and cultures,” he stated.
Colombia’s call has been joined by various international voices that
denounce the impact of the economic siege on critical services such as
health, electricity, education, and access to water, among other vital and
widely affected areas.
Among them is the government of Venezuela, which denounced that Trump’s
recent executive orders have intensified a blockade that already exceeds
six decades, directly affecting the electrical and productive system.
For her part, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has been emphatic
in rejecting the measures of the Trump administration, and, in turn,
confirmed that Mexico will maintain the constant sending of humanitarian
aid. “We are going to continue sending food and other requests that the
Cuban government has made to us for its people,” she asserted.
Nations such as Russia, China, France, and Spain have also expressed their
support for the island, urging a diplomatic solution that stops the
deterioration of the quality of life of Cubans and their willingness to
maintain shipments of humanitarian aid to the island.
