Israel escalates attacks and assassinations in Syria, killing people it
claims threatened its occupying forces, as Netanyahu threatens Turkey,
raising fears Syria is next.

Israel is escalating its attacks and assassinations across Syria, killing
Palestinians and Syrians it claims posed imminent threats to its forces, in
a pattern it has perfected in Gaza and Lebanon, and now appears to be
exporting to Syrian soil.

On Saturday, an Israeli drone struck a vehicle near the village of Beit
Jinn in the Damascus countryside, wounding at least one person, according
to Syrian media. Within hours, the Israeli occupation army claimed its
forces had opened fire in southern Syria on what it called a 'terrorist'
who posed a direct threat to them, and Israeli army radio cited a source
claiming the targeted person had been planning to detonate an explosive
device against Israeli forces. The justification was identical to the
language Israel uses daily in Gaza and Lebanon: kill first, then assert the
victim was moments from attacking Israeli troops, troops that are
themselves occupying the very land where the killing takes place.

The claim collapses under the most basic scrutiny. The Israeli forces said
to be under threat in southern Syria are an invading army operating inside
Syrian territory, in areas Israel seized after the fall of the previous
Syrian government. By its own logic, Israel invades a country, stations its
forces there, and then kills anyone it accuses of intending to resist that
presence, branding the defense of Syrian land against a foreign occupation
as terrorism. It is the same formula that has justified thousands of
killings in Gaza and southern Lebanon, now being extended to Syria.

The strikes come amid a sharp escalation that has drawn in Turkey. Days
earlier, Israel bombed the Abu al-Duhur military airfield in Idlib, in
northern Syria, after claiming Turkey intended to deploy forces there. War
criminal Netanyahu declared openly that Israel would not tolerate a Turkish
military presence expanding south in Syria, boasting that Israel had sent
Ankara a message and, when it was not heeded, had made sure Turkey
understood by force.

In a move that has become a hallmark of Israel's conduct before a major
assault, Netanyahu's office released a produced video using satellite
imagery of Turkish positions in Syria, claiming that Turkey's military
bases in the country now more than triple Israel's own footprint. The video
is a familiar prelude. In both Lebanon and Gaza, Israel has repeatedly gone
to the public with montaged footage and alarmist claims about an enemy
threat, framing the target as an existential danger, before launching the
attacks and seizing the territory it had already planned to take. The
publication of such material about Syria raises the question of whether the
same sequence, manufactured threat, public messaging, then invasion and
occupation, is now being set in motion against Syria.

Even Washington has signaled unease at the trajectory. US envoy Tom Barrack
suggested that Israel's strike on the Syrian airfield may have been
intended to bait Turkey into a military response, calling it a very
aggressive move that might play well for Netanyahu going into Israel's
elections, and noting that election periods can produce irrational
judgment. The remark points to the domestic driver behind the escalation: a
prime minister trailing in the polls before an October vote, with every
incentive to manufacture confrontations that let him campaign as Israel's
indispensable wartime leader.
