Israel assassinates Gaza police chief Colonel Jamal Abu Kumeil in an
airstrike, a fresh ceasefire violation, as US mediators accuse Netanyahu of
sabotaging the deal.

Israel assassinated the head of the Gaza governorate police, Colonel Jamal
Abu Kumeil, in an airstrike that targeted his vehicle southwest of Gaza
City, in a fresh violation of the ceasefire in force since October. The
strike killed the senior officer as he traveled through the area, in the
latest in a series of Israeli assassinations that have continued unbroken
despite the truce.

Gaza's Interior Ministry condemned the assassination, describing it as a
dangerous escalation aimed at the civilian policing that maintains order in
the Strip and warning that targeting the police threatens to sow chaos. The
ministry said the killing represented a new violation of the ceasefire
agreement and an obstruction of efforts to consolidate the truce and calm
the situation, stressing that striking the police force is a breach of
international law. It pointed to the repeated Israeli targeting of police
commanders and officers in Gaza and called on the international community
and the mediating states to intervene urgently to halt the targeting of the
police and put an end to Israel's violations.

The assassination came despite mounting pressure on Israel from the
mediators, including the United States, to halt its attacks and allow the
ceasefire to hold. US officials, among them President Donald Trump's
son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner, along with envoy Steve Witkoff, have
concluded that Netanyahu is sabotaging the deal, pointing to the continued
Israeli assassinations and killings in Gaza as evidence that Israel is
working to undermine the agreement rather than implement it. American
officials have voiced growing frustration with Israeli operations they
regard as violations of the truce, even as Israel presses on with strikes
that kill Palestinians almost daily.

The killing also lands weeks after Palestinian factions accepted a roadmap
to move into the second phase of Trump's plan, agreeing to place Gaza's
heavy weapons under the supervision of the Palestinian technocratic
committee meant to administer the Strip. Israel rejected that roadmap
outright. Netanyahu declared that Israel would not withdraw from Gaza until
Hamas is fully disarmed, and Israeli officials have repeatedly asserted
that Israel will never pull its forces out of Gaza, Lebanon, or Syria under
any agreement reached, signaling that no deal will be allowed to constrain
its continued occupation and attacks.

Since the ceasefire took effect on October 10, 2025, Israel has killed more
than 1,250 Palestinians and wounded over 4,100 others in continuous
violations of the truce, according to Gaza's health ministry, among them
civilians, entire families, and police and civil defense personnel. The
assassination of the head of Gaza's police is the starkest sign yet that
Israel intends to keep killing regardless of the agreement, hollowing out
the ceasefire while its own allies openly accuse it of wrecking the very
deal they brokered.
