Rice rose 50% in three months, oil doubled in price, and cooking gas is 60%
more expensive than at the beginning of the year.

United Nations human rights experts warned of a “silent Gaza” in Cuba,
denouncing that U.S. sanctions are causing fuel and electricity shortages
with serious humanitarian consequences.

The statement, issued from the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, stressed
that food and basic resources should not be used as instruments of
political pressure, as this violates the right to life.

Democratic members of the U.S. Congress Mark Pocan, Teresa Leger-Fernandez,
Maxine Dexter, and Delia Catalina Ramirez visited Cuba in July, met with
President Miguel Diaz-Canel, and condemned the energy blockade imposed by
Washington.

Pocan stated that the Cuban situation is comparable to “a silent Gaza,”
because although there are no attacks, the population cannot work, preserve
food, access medicine, or maintain a normal life.

The reference is linked to the crisis in the Gaza Strip during the
2023-2025 war between Israel and Hamas, which left more than 73,000 dead
and destroyed essential infrastructure, blocking access to basic services.

Experts recalled that the United States expanded unilateral sanctions in
June 2026, affecting energy companies and further blocking the acquisition
of fuel, even for humanitarian purposes, amid nationwide blackouts in Cuba.

The energy crisis hits women, children, the elderly, and farmers
particularly hard. Prolonged blackouts disrupt medical services, cause
medicine shortages, and hinder treatments such as cancer, exacerbating
social vulnerability.

Inflation reflects the impact: rice rose 50% in three months, oil doubled
in price, and cooking gas is 60% more expensive than at the beginning of
the year.

UN Experts George Katrougalos, Zaina Jallad, Sofia Monsalve Suarez, Surya
Deva and the Working Group on Peasants called on the U.S. government to
cease coercive measures and on the Security Council and the General
Assembly to act urgently.
