Dear colleagues, advocates, and allies,

I’m reaching out with an*urgent update*and a request for your immediate 
support.

Vessels from the*Global Sumud Flotilla*— carrying civilians from 55 
countries and humanitarian aid bound for Gaza — are currently 
being*intercepted in international waters near Crete*. This situation is 
ongoing and time-sensitive. Live footage of our sailing vessels can be

Reports from those onboard indicate:

  * Military speedboats identifying themselves as “Israel” have
    approached the vessels
  * Armed military personnel pointed lasers and semi-automatic weapons
    at civilians
  * Participants have been ordered to the front of the boats and forced
    onto their hands and knees
  * Communications are being actively jammed
  * An SOS distress signal has been issued

This operation is taking place*hundreds of miles outside Israeli 
territorial waters*, under cover of darkness. Israeli forces are 
reportedly demanding surrender of the vessels and threatening the use of 
force if compliance is not secured.

While the circumstances are still unfolding and key details cannot be 
confirmed, the underlying criminality and danger of this situation is clear:

1. This is piracy: The Israeli Navy is acting as an armed aggressor in 
international waters, far outside its jurisdiction. Threatening 
civilians at gunpoint and demanding surrender of their vessels meets the 
definition of piracy under international law.

2. Citizens from 55 countries are at risk right now. These are ordinary 
people — constituents, neighbors, passport holders of multiple nations — 
currently in conditions of extreme vulnerability. Their governments have 
a duty to act to protect them.

3. Greece bears a particular and immediate responsibility. This incident 
is unfolding in Greece’s maritime vicinity. Greek authorities must act 
both diplomatically and practically to ensure the safety of the flotilla 
and to respond to this escalation in waters under their purview.

4. International law is unambiguous: Humanitarian missions in 
international waters are legally protected. There is no legal basis for 
this interception. Silence or inaction by governments contributes to its 
normalization.

5.Officials in the U.S. Government Must Act Immediately (Dept of State, 
Embassys, & Members of Congress). Their intervention is required to 
ensure immediate protection for all U.S. citizens aboard the flotilla; 
and to facilitate direct and urgent engagement with the government of 
Greece, in whose maritime vicinity this incident is unfolding, to ensure 
it fulfills its responsibilities as the regional coastal state; and to 
unequivocally condemn Israel’s actions as a violation of international 
law and a direct threat to the lives of U.S. citizens, and to demand 
U.S. citizens be protected and allowed to continue their lawful mission. 
In addition, U.S. authorities must take all necessary diplomatic steps 
to secure the safety of those onboard and coordinate with partner 
governments to ensure the collective protection of citizens from all 55 
nations represented.

6. Time is critical. The flotilla is still sailing and the threat 
remains for all vessels. Every hour of governmental inaction is an hour 
in which lives remain at risk. Urgency is not rhetorical — it is the 
reality.
