A Global Army to liberate Palestine: An unprecedented call reflecting
shifts in the era of genocide

Saturday 27-September-2025

NEW YORK, (PIC)

After nearly two years of the genocide committed by Israel in the Gaza
Strip, Colombian President Gustavo Petro stood at the UN podium and called
for the formation of a global force to liberate Palestine a call that
reflects the profound shifts brought about worldwide by the Al-Aqsa Flood
operation.

A UN Army for Palestine

In his recent address to the UN General Assembly, President Petro urged
Global South nations to form an international army “to liberate Palestine”
and defend themselves against the “tyranny and authoritarianism” promoted
by the United States and NATO.

He called on countries “that do not accept genocide” to establish “an armed
force to defend the lives of the Palestinian people,” stressing that mere
condemnation and denunciation were no longer effective in the face of
Israel’s crimes in Gaza and the West Bank.

Brazilian support

In a remarkable moment captured by cameras, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio
Lula da Silva was seen kissing the head of his Colombian counterpart
following his call for an international army to liberate Palestine and
confront tyranny and authoritarianism.

Lula emphasized that the authority of the United Nations was at stake,
peace could not be achieved with impunity, and nothing could justify the
ongoing genocide in Gaza.

President Petro reiterated his call in an interview with Al Jazeera,
stressing that denunciations no longer stopped the bombings or saved
civilians from the genocide that has continued for nearly two years.

He also linked Colombia’s historical experience with violence and internal
conflict to solidarity with Palestinians, giving his political stance a
human and experiential dimension.

Petro’s insistence on the failure of denunciations highlights the growing
discontent among large sectors of the world’s peoples, who view
international institutions, especially the Security Council, as powerless
in the face of the US veto.

In his speech, Petro stressed the need to arrest those accused of
committing genocide in Gaza and refer them to the International Criminal
Court, a demand that coincides with actual arrest warrants against
Netanyahu and his former war minister, which remain shelved due to global
double standards.

On X, Petro wrote: “Free Palestine. If Gaza falls, humanity will die.”

Post-Al-Aqsa Flood transformations

This advanced and unprecedented call represents a major shift that has
become increasingly visible since the Al-Aqsa Flood operation in October
2023 and Israel’s subsequent genocide in Gaza, a turning point in the
world’s consciousness regarding the Palestinian cause.

While Israel attempted to frame its war as self-defense, the scale of
destruction, killing, and forced displacement turned the global narrative
upside down, redefining the conflict as one of settler-colonialism
committing genocide, while exposing the falsehood of the “self-defense”
claim since human rights charters affirm that an occupying power cannot
invoke such a right.

A historic shift

According to experts, Petro’s statements reflect this transformation: it is
no longer enough to speak of a “two-state solution” or issue appeals. New
concepts such as “liberating Palestine” and “saving Gaza” have emerged,
explaining why he proposed the idea of a global army to confront Israel.

Writer Ahmad Basheer Al-Eileh argues that the courageous Colombian
president launched a qualitative shift in international leftist discourse.
Unlike the traditional leftist critique of US policies, imperialism, or
global capitalism, Petro went further by making a practical, unprecedented
call for a “Liberation Army” under the “Uniting for Peace” framework.

He stressed that this is a leap from protest to organized resistance,
giving it historic weight, and considered the call for a global army to
liberate Palestine the strongest statement ever made by the international
left.

Petro’s speech also elevated the Palestinian cause from a humanitarian
solidarity issue or regional conflict to a central test of international
morality. He framed what is happening in Gaza as “genocide” and compared
its perpetrators to Hitler, placing the world before an unavoidable moral
test.

Shifts in global discourse

Day after day, opposition to Israel expands due to its brutal assault and
genocide against Palestinians, reflected in transformations in global
discourse and the stances of many states, alongside growing popular
rejection of Israel’s crimes.

In a notable move, the European Union is considering for the first time
suspending or canceling its free trade agreement with Israel. Recognition
of Palestine is also expanding to include major powers such as Britain,
France, Canada, and Australia, further increasing pressure on Israel as it
faces a critical diplomatic and economic moment amid mounting international
backlash.

Reports from Israeli newspapers The Marker and Calcalist depict a bleak
picture of Israel’s situation, with direct threats to its trade status,
declining international support, and increasing reliance on US President
Donald Trump’s administration.

A moral rebellion

President Petro’s call for a global force to liberate Palestine, combined
with the growing worldwide movement against Israel, signals a mounting
moral rebellion against the international community’s failure to confront
the genocide in Gaza.

Although the formation of a “global army” may seem far-fetched at present,
the mere fact that a head of state proposed it opens the door to rethinking
the tools of confronting occupation. It affirms that the Palestinian cause
has entered a new stage after the Al-Aqsa Flood, where Palestine can no
longer remain hostage to empty condemnations but has become synonymous with
the ultimate test of global human conscience.
