Occupation of Gaza City: The peak of Israeli genocide and a test of human
conscience

On the 43rd anniversary of the Sabra and Shatila massacre, the Israeli
occupation army chose to announce the beginning of its large-scale assault
on Gaza City. This announcement contained nothing new except for its usual
misleading language. The Israeli aggression has continued relentlessly for
23 months, but perhaps what is new is that Israel now declares its project
more explicitly, more defiantly, and more brazenly: genocide, destruction,
and displacement of the Palestinian people.

Since the Nakba, acts of extermination and uprooting have been repeatedly
carried out, from Deir Yassin in 1948 to Kafr Qasim in 1956, from Sabra and
Shatila in 1982 to the ongoing annihilation of Gaza, turning the Nakba into
an ongoing reality and making today’s events a continuation of a bloody
colonial path from which Israel has long escaped punishment and
accountability.

Since October 2023, Israel has been waging a full-scale war of
extermination against the Palestinian people in Gaza, leaving over 250,000
people dead or wounded, numbers now acknowledged by Israeli leaders
themselves with sadism and arrogance, after they had long dismissed them
when they came from Gaza’s Ministry of Health. Entire cities and
neighborhoods have been leveled, millions of tons of rubble have buried
landmarks and homes, the environment has been poisoned, and the Strip has
been turned into a hazardous wasteland for years to come.

A global human heritage

Gaza, with its small area of just 365 km², is not merely a besieged piece
of land but a global human heritage extending back thousands of years. It
is one of the world’s oldest inhabited cities, with roots dating back more
than three millennia. It was home to the Canaanites and the ancient
Philistines and served as a strategic hub on global trade routes linking
Egypt and the Levant, a gateway between Asia and Africa.

Gaza holds unique historical monuments, mosques, churches, and old markets
that form a continuous human memory. Their destruction is a major cultural
crime that goes beyond Palestinians and strikes at all of humanity, erasing
a long record of creativity and cultural diversity.

But the danger of genocide is not limited to historical heritage. Gaza has
long been known for its unyielding resilience, standing tall against
invaders throughout history. This deeply rooted steadfastness has made it a
forward fortress protecting its Arab and Islamic surroundings and a symbol
of rising from the rubble. The gravest danger today is that Israel seeks to
break this resilience by destroying its people and all means of life so
that the city remains without memory, without the ability to rise again.

The Israeli eradication mindset haunts the Palestinian across all his
historic land. The occupier declares itself a “Jewish state” that
recognizes neither the Palestinian nor his existence or his land, and today
imposes what it calls the enforcement of “sovereignty” over the West Bank,
completely tied to the attempt to empty Gaza of its population. The cause
is one, and the goal is one: the expulsion of the Palestinian people.

A global threat

The aggression on Gaza is not isolated from its regional context. In
parallel, Israel has launched blatant attacks on several Arab and Muslim
countries and has threatened others, as part of its “Greater Israel”
project reproducing a colonial discourse that threatens the entire region.
The facts reveal that the issue is not just “Hamas,” but a project of
domination that destabilizes the entire Levant and extends to the Red Sea
and the Gulf.

Israel has today transformed from a mere occupying power into a global
threat beyond the borders of Palestine. Its continued genocide, siege, and
starvation of Gaza despite International Court of Justice orders exposes
the collapse of the international legal system and undermines the principle
of prohibiting land acquisition by force, a cornerstone of the post–World
War II order. The open American and Western military support not only
shields Israel but risks turning the world into a new arena of global chaos.

Deceptive negotiations

Over the past two years, Israel, in collaboration with the United States,
has used negotiations as a cover to prolong the war. It discarded and broke
the March 2025 agreement when it reneged on its commitments and continued
its aggression. Since then, the same pattern has repeated: successive
proposals that it either rejects or stalls on, promises of ceasefires that
turn into traps, and even direct targeting of negotiators through
airstrikes and assassinations including the negotiators themselves in a
flagrant violation of basic diplomatic norms.

The so-called political track has become nothing more than a smokescreen to
mislead international opinion and portray Israel as a “negotiating party”
rather than a war criminal using negotiations as a tool to buy time,
reposition militarily, and continue its aggression without paying any real
political price.

Collapse of the Israeli propaganda

Alongside its field crimes, Israel wages a parallel media war aimed at
falsifying facts and fabricating an alternative narrative that downplays
the scale of the catastrophe it is committing. It has assassinated around
250 Palestinian journalists and barred global media from entering Gaza so
that it alone controls the narrative. But it has failed. Thousands of
images and testimonies have emerged, revealing the genocide in real time,
exposing its deceit before the entire world.

While Israeli discourse continues to push the misleading claim that it is
fighting “Hamas” to retrieve what it calls “hostages,” the truth is that
these captives are merely occupying soldiers captured by the resistance
after participating in killing and bombing Palestinians. Their presence in
the Gaza envelope before October 7 was a continuation of four bloody wars
Israel had already waged against the Strip. What is happening today is
merely the continuation of that path, but in its most horrific form: a
systematic war of extermination, forced displacement, and an attempt to
erase Palestinian existence altogether.

The cliché of Israeli propaganda has collapsed before the facts, along with
Western media complicity: “Israel’s right to self-defense.” What right can
be built on falsehood and deny a people’s very existence on their land?
This pretext has fallen, revealing itself as nothing more than a rehashed
version of the colonial myth: “a land without a people for a people without
a land.” It is a deceptive formula that justifies killing and grants a
false cover to an ongoing occupation, in blatant violation of international
law. According to human rights principles and charters, an occupier has no
“right to self-defense” against the people under its occupation.

Gaza as a global symbol of liberation

Gaza is no longer merely a Palestinian city but a global symbol of
liberation and resilience, a warning bell reminding the world that
complicity in genocide will not go unchallenged. Its steadfastness protects
Palestinians from annihilation, but also blocks broader expansionist
projects that threaten the entire region and the world.

And Gaza is no longer alone. Waves of global solidarity have swept across
five continents, from New York to London, Cape Town, and Sydney, confirming
that the Palestinian cause has become a unifying human conscience. Millions
have taken to the streets in the largest protests since the Vietnam War,
demanding an end to the genocide and rejecting international silence.

Beyond the streets, striking stances by artists, thinkers, and global
influencers have shifted public opinion, opened new horizons for freedom,
and broken the traditional media monopoly that long shielded Israel. This
popular and cultural solidarity goes beyond empathy it is shaping a new
global consciousness that sees Gaza as a symbol of the fight against
colonialism and genocide, and against a global system built on double
standards.
