  The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, Thursday reaffirmed his 
government’s anti-drug policy, which in addition to increasing cocaine 
seizures promoted agrarian and rural improvements to expand the 
well-being of peasants and guarantee the substitution of illicit crops, 
in line with a comprehensive approach, focused on respect for human rights.

During a press conference, the Colombian head of state denied that the 
Caribbean Sea is crossed by U.S. warships and that the country has 
killed a Colombian fisherman. Such maneuvers break international law. 
The White House commits extrajudicial killings and uses disproportionate 
force, he said.

He asserted that President Donald Trump’s proposals are false and become 
insults to him and Colombia. He believes that the ideological lobby 
around the president, led by the oligarchy, is trying to prevent 
Colombian progressivism from being victorious in the 2026 elections.

If you take into account that they want to take over Venezuela’s oil, 
then a strategy is revealed to overthrow sovereign governments and 
dismember states as they once did with Libya or Syria, he warned.

*Sustained decline in illicit crops *

He cited data from the United Nations that show that there is a 
sustained decrease during his government of illicit crops, and an 
increase in the tendency to abandon them and promote legal economies.

He explained that Colombia has replaced 22,000 hectares of illicit crops 
in the last two years and that in the current year they are almost 
1,000. Drug traffickers realize that they are having problems in 
Colombia and so drug traffickers expand their networks to other 
countries, such as Ecuador, he said.

Our government has been the most effective in the seizure of cocaine in 
history, with a Public Force that has become the most effective, with an 
Executive that builds and coordinates the strategy, Petro said.

He explained that they have focused on seizing on roads, in ports, 
inside containers on board ships that are checked in the sending ports, 
in those of receiving countries or in intermediate stops. We have 
coordinated intelligence with numerous nations and this allows us to 
seize large quantities without having to kill anyone, he said.

*Taking into account the needs of the farmer *

He added that the strategy was articulated in several criteria, such as 
considering that forced eradication has been a failure – which does not 
take into account the needs of the peasant – and that it is more 
effective to focus on the drug trafficker and not on the peasant.

He explained that until before his government, the strategy of the 
oligarchy in alliance with the U.S. was to attack crops and hit the 
peasantry, which generated violent responses from the peasantry. He 
emphasized the importance of winning the peasant as an ally and offering 
him opportunities (credits, studies, infrastructures) to expand his 
well-being without the need to become an employee of the drug 
trafficking mafias.

He said that pursuing and requisitioning the wealth of drug traffickers 
has been effective in Colombia, but not in other nations. He said that 
the cocaine market is dominated by multinational groups that live in 
large luxury cities – such as New York, Miami, Madrid, Rome or Dubai – 
not in Colombia or in the Colombian countryside.

*In Colombia, drug trafficking used to be governed *

Petro said that Trump is going to withdraw financial support at the time 
when Colombia is doing better in this confrontation. He considered that 
Trump does not know this issue in depth and blamed misinformation on the 
ideological lobby penetrated by the Colombian extreme right, which moves 
around the president.

He said that funds have already been included in the next budget to 
guarantee the purchase of military means, such as helicopters, to combat 
drug trafficking in areas that are difficult to access.

He said that before the results in the fight against drug trafficking 
were bad because they were governed with drug trafficking. In our case 
we do not govern with drug trafficking, Petro remarked.

He recalled that one million Latin Americans have died due to the war on 
drugs promoted by the United States, including 300,000 Colombians.

He proposed that a Latin American mechanism be created to address this 
challenge, taking as a starting point the international police center 
created months ago by the countries of the Amazon basin
