Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Saturday lashed out at his US 
counterpart, Donald Trump, over recent attacks by that country on boats 
in the Caribbean and the Pacific, and warned him that, as “the legend 
says, the jaguar will awaken if the golden eagle dares to attack the 
condor.”

Speaking at the III Social Summit of the Peoples of Latin America and 
the Caribbean, held in Santa Marta in parallel to the IV Summit of the 
Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the 
European Union (EU), which begins tomorrow, Petro affirmed that “it is 
still possible to talk” with the United States, but stressed that it 
must be with a dialogue “as equals and without kneeling.”

“Do not awaken the jaguar,” the president insisted, and added: “I would 
say to (US Secretary of State, Marco) Rubio, and to Trump, ‘be careful, 
you are crossing the Caribbean of the liberators, you are messing with 
the homeland of Bolívar.'”

The president also stated that, among the more than 70 deaths recorded 
in these recent US attacks, “there is not a single drug trafficker,” but 
“poor people, workers of an illicit trade that determines the world,” 
and called for reviving Gran Colombia to “unite the Bolivarian dream 
again and be powerful.”

“Why don’t we organize, through the bases of society, without asking 
permission, the committees of the Constituent Assembly among the three 
or four countries that formed Gran Colombia?” Petro proposed, assuring 
that this union “could also be the solution to the current internal 
problems.”

Likewise, the president again accused the US government of having asked 
European and Latin American leaders “not to come” to the IV Celac-EU 
Summit, which will bring together representatives of 60 states -27 
European and 33 Latin American- between tomorrow and Monday in Santa Marta.

During his speech at the III Social Summit of the Peoples of Latin 
America and the Caribbean, Petro also celebrated that in the last 
General Assembly of the United Nations in New York, last September, “two 
people felt completely alone: Mr. Trump and (the Prime Minister of 
Israel, Benjamin) Netanyahu.”

The president, one of the most critical global political leaders of the 
Israeli offensive in Gaza, insisted that the support shown by several 
countries to Palestine “left Trump and Netanyahu in isolation” and 
affirmed that, in the world, “democracy has died” because what reigns is 
“the crisis of a productive system called capitalism.”

“This that we are living in Gaza is going to happen in the south,” he 
warned, “they are showing us their barbarity, their way of acting from 
now on.”
