More than two years into the genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, tents have 
become the only available shelter for hundreds of thousands of residents 
after 90% of the Strip’s homes were destroyed. They now stand as both a 
refuge and a symbol of steadfastness and rootedness in the land.

 From October 7, 2023, until the signing of the ceasefire agreement on 
October 9, 2025, Gaza witnessed one of the largest humanitarian 
catastrophes of modern times. Tens of thousands of homes were destroyed, 
forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee. Many now live in 
temporary tents erected over the rubble, clinging to life and memories 
amid the devastation.

Abu Saud: A symbol of resilience

Amid the ruins and the tents, Mahmoud Abu Saud stands before what 
remains of his demolished home in the Al-Amal neighborhood of Khan 
Yunis, watching his children play among the stones. He says, “The tent 
doesn’t really protect us… and the cold hurts… but the hardest thing is 
watching your home turn into dust before your eyes, remembering every 
laugh, every corner inside it.”

He adds, “The kids are what give us strength. Every day I tell myself: 
we must endure, we must stay… because life doesn’t stop.”

Running his hand over a stone from the remains of his wall, he says, 
“The stone broke… but the heart didn’t. Whoever built once can build 
again and again. We don’t learn defeat… we learn how to stand back up.”

Tragic numbers amid the ruins

Life in the Gaza Strip during this period was catastrophic by every 
measure. About 92% of homes, roughly 436,000 housing units, were damaged 
or completely destroyed, leaving millions without shelter, according to 
government reports in Gaza.

More than 2.1 million people became internally displaced, struggling 
daily to find a safe place within temporary tents built over the debris.

The numbers of martyrs and injured were staggering: reports recorded 
around 69,000 martyrs, including more than 20,000 children, and over 
170,000 injured. More than 78% of infrastructure and buildings were 
damaged, while agriculture was devastated, worsening the hardships of 
daily life.

“The tent is small, but hope is great”

In an area crowded with worn-out tents, Fatima Hamdan sits with her 
three children inside a small tent erected where her house once stood.

In a calm but determined voice, she says, “Every day I wake up and count 
the remnants I managed to save… a photo here, a dish there… that’s all 
that’s left of our life, and I won’t let it go.”

She tells our correspondent, “Despite the cold, the wind, and the harsh 
conditions, I keep giving my children a sense of safety. The tent is 
small, but hope is great… and we will not give up.”

Life atop the rubble is nearly impossible, yet unavoidable. There’s no 
electricity, not enough water, and the creeping chill of winter makes 
survival even harder. Still, the people of Gaza continue, every day, 
trying to rebuild their lives once more.
