GAZA, (PIC)

Amid nearly two years of Israeli genocidal war, the suffering of pregnant
women in Gaza has reached unbearable levels, unveiling what human rights
groups describe as the largest act of biological genocide carried out by
Israel, erasing an entire generation before it is even born.

Every childbirth has become a death-defying ordeal. Every mother’s cry
echoes across tents and crumbling hospitals, bearing witness to an
unrelenting crime. Women are giving birth under bombardment and starvation.
Babies are born prematurely, only to die within hours.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health, along with testimonies from mothers
and doctors, reveal a systematic policy that suffocates the Palestinian
right to life and severs their human continuity.

Shocking data

A report by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights discloses harrowing
figures, evidence of a generation being wiped out before it can take its
first breath.

According to the report, in just the first half of 2025, the Ministry of
Health recorded:
• 17,000 births
• 2,600 miscarriages
• 220 fetal deaths during pregnancy or shortly before delivery
• 21 neonatal deaths on their first day of life
• 1,600 babies born underweight (9.41%)
• 2,535 newborns admitted to NICU due to health complications (14.91%)
• 1,460 premature births (8.59%)

Stories of suffering

These aren’t just numbers—they are stories of mothers who lost their
children because of starvation, displacement, and lack of medical care.

Shomoukh Karsou, a 20-year-old mother, shares her heartbreak, “On July 2,
2025, I gave birth prematurely in the 27th week. My baby boy, Mo’in,
weighed only one kilogram. His lungs, liver, and kidneys were undeveloped.
During my pregnancy, I survived on just two meals of lentils a day. I
couldn’t afford pregnancy-support injections. I lived under the pressure of
displacement and constant fear. After delivery, he was taken to the
NICU—but he died after only 48 hours.”

Another mother, M.Q., lost her baby girl Khadija on July 1, 2025, “She was
born deformed in the eighth month of pregnancy and underdeveloped. Doctors
told me it was due to malnutrition, smoke, and phosphorus exposure. I only
ate pasta and lentils. I couldn’t access medical care. At six months, they
discovered birth defects. In the eighth month, she died during labor.”

Famine is the cause

Doctors confirm these cases are not isolated. Dr. Naji Al-Qarshali, a
consultant in obstetrics and gynecology, said, “Since March 2025, I’ve seen
four to five cases a day, miscarriages, premature births, or fetal deaths.
The situation is out of control. Ongoing famine and severe malnutrition are
the main causes.”

Dr. Naeem Ayyoub, director of Al-Sahaba Medical Hospital, added, “Even
those who continue to carry for nine months give birth to underweight or
deformed babies. Malnutrition weakens the mother’s heart and nervous
system. Some women have lost over 10 kilograms during pregnancy. We see it
daily.”

Falasteen, 36, shared, “In May 2024, I miscarried at six months. We were
living on nothing but duqqa (a spice blend) without bread. I miscarried at
home with life-threatening bleeding. On July 7, 2025, I lost my second
baby, Youssef, after a premature birth at 25 weeks. He weighed only 700
grams. He was on oxygen and IV fluids for two days, then passed away. Now I
live in constant fear for my surviving children, who are severely
malnourished.”

These testimonies reveal that pregnant women in Gaza bear the brunt of a
comprehensive Israeli war, in which starvation and deprivation are used as
tools of slow and systematic killing.

The few hospitals left standing suffer from power outages, severe shortages
of medicine, and failing incubators—all while famine intensifies due to the
full closure of border crossings by Israeli occupation forces since March
2, 2025.

The genocide continues. The occupation suffocates life before it begins. A
whole generation is being erased under a chilling international silence.

Will the world act to stop this deliberate extermination?
