The National Campaign to Retrieve Martyrs’ Bodies said on Thursday that the
Israeli occupation authority (IOA) continues to withhold the bodies of 665
martyrs, mostly Palestinians, at the so-called cemeteries of numbers and in
morgues.

According to the National Campaign, some of those bodies have been detained
by Israel since the 1960s and 1970s.

The National Campaign also said that those 665 martyrs do not include the
withheld bodies of citizens from the Gaza Strip, adding that there is no
accurate information about their numbers.

The cemetery of numbers is a set of secret burial sites surrounded by
stones and lacking proper markers. Each grave has a metal plate with a
specific number instead of names for the martyrs, with each number
referring to the security file of an individual.

However, human rights organizations confirm that many of these graves date
back to the establishment of Israel.
