and the Amal Movement have called for a mass protest on August 27, aimed at
rejecting recent government decisions they described as undermining
Lebanon’s sovereignty, while reaffirming support for the resistance and its
weapons.
The Central Labor Office of the Amal Movement and Hezbollah’s Central
Syndicates and Workers Unit urged the “workers of Lebanon, its producers,
and honorable unionists” to gather on Wednesday, August 27, at Riad al-Solh
Square in Beirut.
In a joint statement released on Monday, the two parties stressed that the
protest is a response to government decisions issued on August 5 and 7,
2025, which they argued “contradict the higher national interest, the Taif
Agreement, and the formula of coexistence.”
The statement emphasized that the protest is “an affirmation of Lebanon’s
right to preserve its sovereignty, and of the right of its people and
resistance to defend and liberate its land from Israeli occupation. It
reflects faith in the sanctity of the resistance and its honorable weapons

that defend the nation, and a commitment to protect Lebanon’s official
decision-making from external pressures, under the slogan: ‘Far be it from
us to accept humiliation.’”
It added, “We have endured long enough in the face of challenges
confronting our nation, and the time has come to express our unified
national stance. We are preparing for a major national stand to reject the
path of submission and surrender, and to defend Lebanon’s strength and
sovereignty.”
Affirming the role of resistance
The statement further stressed that the protest is “a reaffirmation of our
right to safeguard our weapons, which have proven their ability to ward off
aggression, and of our right to resist the Israeli enemy that violates our
land, occupies parts of it

and restricts our freedom.”
It also declared, “This is a tribute to the blood of our righteous martyrs

and in line with what we learned from the disappeared Imam Moussa al-Sadr
that ‘Israel is absolute evil and dealing with it is forbidden,’ and from
Imam Khomeini that ‘Israel is a cancerous gland.’”
The two parties urged Lebanese workers to make August 27 “a day marked in
history, with your presence and your voices affirming the will to remain
steadfast and reject submission,” emphasizing that “this protest is a
confirmation of the resistance’s role and its honorable weapon in defending
the dignity and sovereignty of the nation.”
Cabinet decision to monopolize arms
On August 5, the Lebanese government announced that it had tasked the
Lebanese Army with preparing a plan to place all arms under state control
before the end of the year, with a deadline of August 31 to present the
plan to the Cabinet for discussion.
On August 7, the government also approved the objectives

outlined in a paper submitted to Lebanon by US envoy Tom Barrack.
It's important to note that Hezbollah and the Amal movement are Lebanon's
strongest and most popular political forces. In the latest elections,
Hezbollah candidates across seven districts secured 344,882 votes,
representing 8.82% of registered voters and 17.67% of actual voters.
Meanwhile, Amal Movement candidates won 190,663 votes, equal to 4.87% of
registered voters and 9.76% of actual voters. Together, the two parties,
without their allies, secured a combined 551,434 votes, amounting to 28.25%
of actual voters.
