Israel bombs Gaza in new military operation

The attack comes after days of lockdowns imposed by Israeli authorities on
residents living near the besieged enclave and troop deployments to the area

The Israeli <https://www.middleeasteye.net/countries/israel> army bombed
multiple locations in the Gaza Strip on Friday afternoon and announced a
new military operation on the besieged Palestinian
<https://www.middleeasteye.net/countries/palestine> enclave.

The attacks hit three different areas: Khan Yunis south of the strip,
Shujaiya in the north, and a residential building in central Gaza. The
Palestinian health ministry reported a number of casualties without
elaborating further.

According to Israeli reports, a senior Islamic Jihad official was killed in
the strikes. There has been no confirmation from the group.

The army said it was targeting the Islamic Jihad in the operation dubbed
"Dawn Rising."

The attack comes after days of lockdowns imposed by Israeli authorities on
residents living near Gaza and troop deployments to the area.

The Israeli army said the measures were in place in fear of retaliatory
attacks by anti-missiles from the Islamic Jihad in Gaza, after a senior
leader of the group was arrested on Monday in the occupied West Bank.
